1.0 out of 5 stars Bad rip-off of Eyewitness format for younger readers, February 7, 2006
This review is from: Dogs (First Discovery Book) (Spiral-bound)
These books were originally published in French, and this one in particular suffers from awkward translation.

This books is a mixture of random folklore-like comments and innane attempts at being educational. "Dogs are called man's best friend" is an example of the first. "The shape of a dog's head depends on its breed" is an example of the second. (As if the shape of a dog's head was what defined breeds!) Children "learn" that dogs have noses and fur. Oh-kay...

Then there are flat mis-statements like that a dog "can smell things up to a million times better than you." Source, please? I've never seen a number that high thrown out by any reputable source. Litters have "four to ten puppies," according to this book. Well, some toy breeds frequently have only one or two puppies per litter. According to this book, dogs can sleep with one eye open, but I've never seen or read of unihemispheric sleep in dogs--another error. And the authors of this book inexplicably put the hyena in the canine family when it's more feline than canine!

In addition, dogs in this book come running "at the slightest whistle", and St. Bernards still save lost mountain travelers. *crosses eyes*

Good points:
-good pictures
-five breeds listed
-dog body language page is decent

SKIP this one. The number of errors is mond-boggling, and pretty pictures can't come close to making up for that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Maybe not accurate but entertaining..., March 20, 2006
This review is from: Dogs (First Discovery Book) (Spiral-bound)
My daughter is 15 mos old and has loved this book dearly for the last 6 months. Earlier on she just carried it around and looked at the photo on the front, but now she lays on the floor and avidly flips through every page. The pictures are fantastic and the pages easy to turn. She points and requests identification of the dogs in the book. I've caught her more than once kissing the pictures. I'd suggest this book if only for the 'toddler friendly' aspect, if not for the exact wording.

Be sure it doesn't end up in a tub of water though, it doesn't stand up to that. ;) Hence we're here to buy another copy.

Thanks Scholastic!
