5.0 out of 5 stars Do dogs really work?, April 1, 2003
This review is from: Dogs on the Job!: True Stories of Phenomenal Dogs (Paperback)
Have you ever wondered what happens to those baseballs that land in the San Francisco Bay whenever the Giants hit a home run? Rio, the Portugese Water Dog and some of his doggie teammates probably retrieved those balls and turned them in to their trainers who auctioned them off to raise money for a pet shelter. These dogs are part of the B.A.R.K. team (Baseball Aquatic Retrieval Korps), and they are just one group of dogs presented in this book who seem to love their jobs. Christopher Farran has produced a very easy-to-read collection of true short stories about working dogs and their owners and trainers. Included in the collection is the story of Uga, the University of Georgia football team mascot. Of all the working dogs in this book, Uga is probably the most famous and his life is by far the easiest. He simply makes an appearance at the football game, gets lots of attention, and spends the rest of his time in an air-conditioned doghouse. The most touching story in the book was about a group of dogs who were trained in a women's prison, providing a sense of purpose for the prisoners and companion dogs for disabled people. Farran provides a list of sources to document his research for each story. The animals' bond with humans is fascinating. This is a delightful story for dog-lovers and anyone who is interested in learning about animal behavior.
