Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

McLennan offers a unique perspective on dog training, comparing and contrasting puppy and child "parenting" techniques and explaining how successfully to maintain a household with both. Part 1, "Dogs as Kids," offers sensible suggestions on training and discipline, using routines, praise, timeouts, and ignoring to mold the dog's behavior. Part 2, "Dogs and Kids," explores the relationship between children and dogs and advises parents on how to introduce a new baby to the dog and a new puppy to the kids. Interaction between the dog and babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and older children are thoroughly discussed, as are the causes of biting, suitability of different types of dog for young children, and dealing with painful situations such as divorce, giving up the dog, and coping with the dog's death. While Mordecai Siegal's A Dog for the Kids ( LJ 11/15/84) has long been the standard title in this area, McLennan's special insights into the complexities of the child/dog relationship and her ability to translate canine behavior and training requirements into terms that even the most inexperienced dog owner can understand are invaluable. For all pet care collection. Photos and index not seen.

From Booklist

McLennan, a dog breeder and parent, explains that there are many issues concerning dogs and kids that need clarification so that a dog fits smoothly into a household and is given adequate, affectionate care. Obedience training is well covered, as are issues such as helping an older dog adjust to a new baby, handling crisis situations such as a lost dog, and deciding custody in case of divorce. Special advice is briefly tucked in on dog and kid activities, such as playing ball or showing the pet. A useful guide for those new to dog ownership or even those old dogs who have forgotten all the tricks. Denise Perry Donavin
