This is a 12,000 word novelette that takes place between Cruel Justice and Impeding Justice and is based on actual events.
It may not be homicide, but to DI Lorne Simpkins it's still murder.

When a reporter friend of DI Lorne Simpkins gives her a tip about a story involving ex-racing greyhounds, Lorne is sceptical.
But after delving into it, she's horrified to discover the grisly fate of racing dogs that are no longer useful to their owners - and she's determined to bring the cruel and uncaring owners to justice...

"Animal welfare is so close to my heart, the real-life plight of these former racing dogs moved me to tears.
I'm delighted to donate all profits of the book to PUPS, The Protection of Unwanted Puppies Society."

Review

Another story featuring DI Lorne Simpkins this time she's out to stop the cruelty of greyhounds at the end of their careers.

Congratulations to Mel Comley for being courageous enough to highlight this issue and for donating the proceeds to P.U.P.S.

This novellette is a fast and heart gripping read, which draws you in right to their plight from the start....H J Murray.

I loved the DI Lorne series by Mel Comley and this short story featuring her was a thrilling, fast-paced read. It's horrendous what these poor ex-greyhounds go through. Kudos to Mel Comley for raising awareness and donating the proceeds to PUPS. Sibel Hodge.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a Dog's Life by Mel Comley May 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
"It's a Dog's Life" by Mel Comley is a heartbreaking but informative story about the fate of greyhounds when they are no longer of use to the people who own and race them. The author has brought this awful cruelty to the forefront with this novella of about 45 pages. DI Lorne Simpkins is notified by a journalist friend that she has found out something about the fate of dogs that race, and she wants Lorne to investigate it. With limited time due to other cases, Lorne agrees to do it and her boss wants it wrapped up in 48 hours. Lorne and her partner, Pete, first of all go to the races to find out what they can.

Lorne is willing to put herself in danger to find out what is going on with one dog owner in particular. When she does find out, it's worse than she thinks. Working on unpaid overtime doesn't go over too well with Lorne's husband and her teenage daughter, but in the end, hers and Pete's risks and time put into this case of animal cruelty are most definitely worth it. It's unbelievable that people really treat animals this way, but unfortunately they do.

This is well worth the time spent reading it. The story, while entertaining and a bit suspenseful, is blatantly accurate about what happens to dogs that can no longer run a race. It's a work of fiction, but the information is correct.

Recommended for anyone who is interested in the welfare of animals or in greyhound rescue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotional and Thrilling March 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Mel Comley is known for her thrilling, swiftly-paced stories, and she's done it again in It's a Dog's Life. However, she's also succeeded in spinning a tale that is also emotional and eye-opening--one that will touch your heart and have you thinking long after you've finished the book. Bravo, Ms. Comley!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow. Just.. wow. November 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This book touched me in ways I can't describe with words and had me close to tears. To think what these greyhounds go through when their career is over is just dreadful.

Mel Comley writes in such a way that you can't help but be moved by this story. With Lorne and Pete, who we love and trust, right in the middle of what's going on, it's another superb Lorne Simpkins story.

Mel Comley should be praised for raising the profile of such a hard topic and donating to PUPS. It takes a truly remarkable person to have the courage to write about something so close to the hearts of many. I think she has done a fantastic job with this book and I encourage everyone to read it

5.0 out of 5 stars a short mystery with a moral. February 18, 2013

This is a great short story in the DI Lorne Simpkins series. But it also tells the tale of the mistreatment of animals, specifically racing dogs, after their days on the track and Di Simpkins trying to put a stop to a part of it. An excellent read! Well worth it!
