A Kid's Review
This review is from: Dogs (Smithsonian Handbooks) (Turtleback)
This Smithsonian Handbook takes a photo encyclopedic approach to the world of dogs. It gives information on the evoluoution of the domestic dog. From companion dogs to working dogs it gives distinguishing features and the classification of dog breeds.
This book contains over three hundred dog breeds. This book gives the most immaculate details I have ever seen in any dog identification manual I have ever read.
This book includes over three hundred dog breeds and wonderfully colored photos.
I very strongly recommend this book for any dog lover who wants to find out a broad variety of information on a very wide array of dog breeds.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Reference Book for Man's Best Friend!, June 16, 2011

This review is from: Dogs (Smithsonian Handbooks) (Turtleback)
Our then-3-year-old son originally read the Insects book and carried it around with him everywhere (it stayed on his bed stairs at night!), excitedly pointing out insects and bugs he found in our yard. We checked out some others from the library and decided to buy the rest of them as they're wonderful reference books and we wanted to foster our son's love for learning.

He love this Dogs book, too. It's thorough, descriptive, has vibrant and detailed pictures, and is very durable (we own the "turtleback" versions, which have harder covers than paperback ones). It helps him understand the different species of dogs, especially when I'm talking about the neighbor's Samoyed, Pug, or whatnot. This set will last for years and encourage our sons (our 2-year old loves them, too, especially the Reptiles one) to explore the world around them, both in books and outside.

I bought this several years ago knowing my husband wanted a dog. He constantly was reviewing the breeds. We now have a 2 1/2 PWD and we still refer to it when we want to know more about a breed. Good addition to a library if you like dogs.
