This is a collection of shorts by David Drake and several other authors. As a Drake fan the only "new" thing is his commentary after each story and the introduction. That being said the stories are all excellent comentary on the human costs of war amoungst those doing the fighting. They make you want to go out and find other books by these authors, which is probably part of the reason they were published this way. But that doesn't make it a bad thing, finding good storys can be a difficult thing at times. The language of a few of the storys may be a little dated but it gives insight into how people from the 40's & 50's saw the future. All in all a good collection of storys.

Any Drake fan, particularly one of his Slammers universe, will enjoy this collection of short stories which illustrate show how those in war view themselves and those around them, both while in action and after. His stated goal is to define how to make a soldier and what happens to those soldiers when and after they go to war?
These are written by other S-F authors, with the exception of Liberty Port, done by Drake. This and Clash By Night, a tale set in the world of Drake's own Seas of Venus and Liberty Port were my favorite although all have merit and were a good read.

Great job pulling authors with similar stories together and getting the best stories out of them. Great read as usual.

I purchased this book because I have enjoyed the Sci-Fi novels of David Drake in the past...especially the "Hammer's Slammers" series of novels...While this book was edited by, instead of written by Mr. Drake, I enjoyed them all the same, and in particular enjoyed his comments at the end of each story. I recommend it..

The stories David Drake writes and the stories he likes will all make you stop and think about the inner man (or woman). In this book every story has lots of action along with reaction, and reflection of the consequence of any armed conflict. I have this both in paper back and on my kindle.

Classic Science-fiction, classic Dave Drake (and that's very good), and at least a long evening of entertainment is in store, much of it thought-provoking. Well worth the time it takes.
