Book Description

Capital Ideas April 1, 2002
A loving tribute to six dogs who taught a woman what is most important in life – a must-have for all dog and animal lovers.

In The Dogs Who Grew Me, Ann Pregosin recounts the invaluable life's lessons she learned from living with five distinct breeds of dogs, from a lively little American Cocker Spaniel to a majestic Bernese Mountain Dog. Moppet is the sweet little spaniel from her childhood who taught her about love. Della is the sleek black Great Dane who taught her devotion. Timber is the wolf-hybrid whose extraordinary beauty inside and out taught her grace. Boo, her iron-willed Rottweiler, is the dog who taught her that no one is exempt from the bad things in life that can and will find us, no matter who we are. Daisy, her chocolate American Cocker Spaniel, is the Master Instructor of the merits of "creature comforts." And Tyler, her Bernese Mountain Dog, is the "Joy of Living Dog" who is teaching her like no dog before him how essential it is to really live this gift of life.

The other lessons taught by these six dogs that "grew" Pregosin as a person are as seemingly simple, but maybe ultimately profound, as the unfettered joy of a walk in the park. They are also lessons about perseverance, the foibles of excessive rigidity and self-defeating aggression, developing patience, welcoming joy, birth and motherhood, the gift of good health, the adjustments to be made as youth gives way to age, how death must be accepted as part of life, and how essential it is to really live the life that came before.

A memoir of a life gloriously lived with dogs, this book also educates as Pregosin provides the "Breed Standard" for each of these purebred dogs as set forth by The American Kennel Club, and then recounts how each respective dog conformed to this "standard" and where, to her delight or chagrin, he departed to be his "own dog." Liberally included throughout are myriad dog issues that will resonate with fellow dog owners, such as visits to the veterinarian — where sometimes it's the merry pandemonium in the waiting room that is the story, trips to boarding facilities, the great flea and tick issue, and the merits of leather versus nylon leashes.

What can I say about this great book? It made me laugh and cry. I read it during my lunch break at work and tears would be streaming down my face from laughter and sadness!

Ann Pregosin discusses her life with dogs. She got her dogs through breeders, which isn't so popular in today's world where rescuing pets from animal shelters is considered more acceptable. But Ms. Pregosin is so knowledgable about dogs that when she explains why she chose the dogs she did and how she found them, it really doesn't matter where she got her beloved dogs from.

The book is full of great stories, as well as tons of information about training, breeds, and dogs in general. You don't have to be a dog lover to like this book. Anyone who loves animals should pick up this book right away!

I enjoyed this book and the stories of her 6 dogs. I am passing this book on to my doggie friends. Worthwhile, enjoyable read. My dogs have also taught me what matters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book; Needs a Competent Publisher, June 22, 2011
By
Rena (VA, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dogs Who Grew Me: A Tribute to the Six Dogs Who Taught Me What Really Matters in Life (Capital Ideas) (Hardcover)
I really enjoyed the author's stories of how she came to have her dogs, the differences in their relationships and what each of them taught her. It was very painful reading her describe the end of life decisions as I've been there. I was almost in tears a couple times. I appreciated her research into the origins of the various breeds, their common personality traits and how her own dogs' personalities matched or diverged from the "breed standard." It was also a good reminder of how the view of dogs in society and their care has evolved since the 1950s! I was sorry when the book ended. I know it was published in 2002 and was left wondering where dogs have taken her next.

HOWEVER, as much as I enjoyed the book -- which I read in the paperbook version -- the shamefully poor proofreading/editing was terribly distracting. There were numerous typos right at the beginning of the book; and more sprinkled throughout the book. I lost track of how many times "lose" and "losing" were misspelled as "loose" and "loosing." If I read the word "myriad" one more time I was going to gouge my eyes out (the word appeared twice in the same paragraph at one point). Grammatical mistakes, misspellings, and repetitive use of uncommon words jarred me right out of the experience of feeling immersed in the story. Whoever the editor was should be absolutely ashamed of the disservice he or she did to the client and reader.
