Touching Memoir With Wonderful Advice!,
By
This review is from: Dogs Who Grew Me: A Tribute to the Six Dogs Who Taught Me What Really Matters in Life (Capital Ideas) (Hardcover)
What can I say about this great book? It made me laugh and cry. I read it during my lunch break at work and tears would be streaming down my face from laughter and sadness! Ann Pregosin discusses her life with dogs. She got her dogs through breeders, which isn't so popular in today's world where rescuing pets from animal shelters is considered more acceptable. But Ms. Pregosin is so knowledgable about dogs that when she explains why she chose the dogs she did and how she found them, it really doesn't matter where she got her beloved dogs from. The book is full of great stories, as well as tons of information about training, breeds, and dogs in general. You don't have to be a dog lover to like this book. Anyone who loves animals should pick up this book right away!

I enjoyed this book and the stories of her 6 dogs. I am passing this book on to my doggie friends. Worthwhile, enjoyable read. My dogs have also taught me what matters.

I really enjoyed the author's stories of how she came to have her dogs, the differences in their relationships and what each of them taught her. It was very painful reading her describe the end of life decisions as I've been there. I was almost in tears a couple times. I appreciated her research into the origins of the various breeds, their common personality traits and how her own dogs' personalities matched or diverged from the "breed standard." It was also a good reminder of how the view of dogs in society and their care has evolved since the 1950s! I was sorry when the book ended. I know it was published in 2002 and was left wondering where dogs have taken her next.
HOWEVER, as much as I enjoyed the book -- which I read in the paperbook version -- the shamefully poor proofreading/editing was terribly distracting. There were numerous typos right at the beginning of the book; and more sprinkled throughout the book. I lost track of how many times "lose" and "losing" were misspelled as "loose" and "loosing." If I read the word "myriad" one more time I was going to gouge my eyes out (the word appeared twice in the same paragraph at one point). Grammatical mistakes, misspellings, and repetitive use of uncommon words jarred me right out of the experience of feeling immersed in the story. Whoever the editor was should be absolutely ashamed of the disservice he or she did to the client and reader. |
