FDA Continues to Caution Dog Owners About Chicken Jerky Products made in China.

November 18, 2011

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is again cautioning consumers that chicken jerky products for dogs (also sold as chicken tenders, strips or treats) may be associated with illness in dogs. In the last 12 months, FDA has seen an increase in the number of complaints it received of dog illnesses associated with consumption of chicken jerky products imported from China. These complaints have been reported to FDA by dog owners and veterinarians.

The last time I purchased this product--a good couple of years ago--it had a very weird smell; it didn't smell anything like chicken. Then I investigated and discovered the chicken was from China. We already know about petfood made in China...

Here is what it says on the Doggswell website:

"Why are the jerky treats made in China?
China is a country where dark meat is more popular due to its inherent fat and flavor. DOGSWELL believes it is less wasteful to obtain our white meat in China where it is abundant, rather than sourcing it domestically, where white meat is less available and held at a premium. Not only do we care about your pet's health by sourcing only the healthiest meat available, we also practice sustainability by reducing as much waste as possible."
[...]

That's it; no more Doggswell!!!! Do they really expect me to believe their slick rhetoric???!!! I am so sick of all the cheap crap that is made in China that I have to return, and I am disgusted with all companies that take jobs away from Americans so they can increase their profit margin.

I'd respect them more if they just came out and admitted that they make more money doing business this way; no, wait a second: I wouldn't!!!

I have UPDATED this REVIEW Jan. 2013: Dogs love it and it's good for them. They hear that bag open and are on me in a second. BUT, these are "Made In China." Though I am told there hasn't been a problem with this company, I cannot serve to my dogs. Too many have died from chicken from China.

I wrote a previous review and gave this five stars. I did not know this chicken was from China. What? We have no organic chicken in the USA? I am so disappointed with this product. On my packages of Dogswell there is nothing about this being "Made in China". I highly regret recommending this. I encourage people considering this product to Google this product for information.

My dogs love these but I discovered they are made in China. So disappointed because I thought they were healthy safe products. Will never buy again.

I usually don't write reviews but when I read Zach's recent review I just HAD to. If you love your pet PLEASE don't give him/her these treats!

We had a beautiful, strong and healthy red ticked Oriental Shorthair Cat named Chopin. He was born November 15, 2009. In July of 2011 he suddenly got very, very sick and nobody knew what was wrong with him, until the vet said that he was poisoned.

Chopin's favorite treats were chicken jerky treats from Vita Kitty - Catswell (same as Dogswell, just for cats) and this was the only thing he would continue to eat when he got sick. We didn't know at that point that the treats made him even more sick. His mom, Wazoo, got sick as well, but she didn't eat as many of these treats and recovered (her kidneys, however, got very much affected and, after a lot of vet visits and pain on her end, died on my birthday, April 19 of this year, 2013). Our other cats - Bubu, Xena and Six-Toes - didn't like the treats, so they didn't get sick.

On August 21, 2011, Chopin passed away in my arms and we were devastated. Shortly after, there was a "voluntary pet food recall" and we reported Chopin's death to the FDA.

I created a video on YouTube for my little Chopin and a page on Facebook "Chopin for Healthy Pet Food", which I will continue to help pet parents get all the information they need to buy healthy pet food - if I had known that this particular treat was produced in China I would have never bought it in the first place.

If I could have given this treat negative stars I would have.

I've fed my dog several packages of the chicken jerky and she really liked them. Unfortunately the chicken being sourced from China is still a concern; I checked the FDA website today and it continues to caution consumers about a potential association between the development of illness in dogs and the consumption of chicken jerky products from China. My pet displayed no ill effects but as a precaution I will not buy this product again.

I trust Dogswell's claims that they have strict quality assurance measures and I don't doubt that they are doing their best to provide quality, safe products for dogs. But 2 of the companies in the most recent recalls also said they had quality assurance measures to assure that their jerky treats were safe. There is an entire community of dog parents who lost a pet horribly, because of chicken jerky treats made in China and many are claiming that they fed their dogs Dogswell jerky treats.

Whether this is true or not, do you really want to take a chance? Dogswell does create jerky bars that are sourced and made in the US and I have more confidence feeding them to our dogs than I do anything that is sourced in China.

Yes, we can say "so what" and trust that a corporation has our pet's best interests in mind or we can choose not to take an unnecessary chance and buy products that support the local economy and are safe for our pets.
