4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Start
If you love this movie (and I'm sure you do or you wouldn't be looking at this CD), than you are probably wondering where some of the essential songs are that were in the film. My guess: Copyright issues. It is a pain making a compilation. Oh well, all the same -- this is a good start. But here are some of the missing tracks you'll want to add to your own collection...

3.0 out of 5 stars What is Good Could Have Been Great
The movie was great and I've watched it so many times on DVD because of the energy and attitude and the music plays a big part of it. That being said, I always feel a movie soundtrack should bring you back to that energy and attitude. My guess: Copyright issues. It is a pain making a compilation. Oh well, all the same -- this is a good start. But here are some of the missing tracks you'll want to add to your own collection. Seasons of Wither (Aerosmith), Hots On For Nowhere (Zepplin), Alladin Sane (David Bowie), Godzilla (Blue Oyster Cult), Fast Cars (Buzzcocks), Gut Feeling (Devo), and One Way Out (Allman Brothers). There are others including Sidwalking Surfing (Jan & Dean), Sneaker Pimps, more Hendrix, more Bowie, more Zepplin, and more Iggy.

The movie was great and I've watched it so many times on DVD because of the energy and attitude and the music plays a big part of it. That being said, I always feel a movie soundtrack should bring you back to that energy and attitude. Unfortunately, many songs listed in the credits are not on this CD: Jimi Hendrix's "Freedom" most notable in the movie is missing, as well as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, Pink Floyd and many others. If they could have just followed the movie's flow it would have been a great compilation of some of the best of the 60's and 70's.

This a teaser that will help sell other records for somebody else because all these musicians are worth indulging in. Did I say records? Sorry, check out the credits at the end of the DVD and buy all their CD's, especially Hendrix.

2.0 out of 5 stars Missing a bunch, August 22, 2002

I noticed that it was missing "Old Man" by Neal Young, "One Way Out" by The Allman Brothers, and "Cat Scratch Fever" by Ted Nugent. This was after seeing the movie once and maybe not even the whole thing. So I just checked the song credits at the end of the film. There were 41 songs listed. So this CD is missing more than a few. I find that very dissapointing.

3.0 out of 5 stars No Gut Feeling, June 13, 2002
This review is from: Dogtown and Z-Boys (Audio CD)
The highlight of this CD is the pic of Shogo dislodging a tile on the back cover. I agree that a few tracks that featured in the movie are tragicly missing but that doesnt stop it from being a collectors item.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome 70s hard rock songs!, May 22, 2002

After seeing this awesome film, I knew that I had to get the soundtrack... The album gets off to an impressive start with Ezy Ryder, which has now become my favorite Hendrix song. The collection only grows stronger, with some truly classic songs (Gimme Danger, La Grange, Maggie May).

The cool thing about this album is that all of the songs are great hits, yet they have seldomly appeared on other collections/compilations. This is a great purchase.

You're right, Patrick...Gut Feeling's off and probably one or two more...sometimes it's just a matter of a record company's admin assistant not returning a request-for-clearance phone call; sometimes it's that that artist or agent wanted WAAAYY too much in use fees. I'm stoked for this CD but will probably "build" my own after the DVD of the film releases, adding other personal-recalled tunes from the era as this scene happened, 10 or 12 rings out from the "inner circle". The Devo close to the film was pivotal, 'cuz that's when everybody cut their hair and went from smoky seventies tunes to amphetamine new wave. Good mix here, though...

5.0 out of 5 stars The movie IS the soundtrack, November 16, 2007
This review is from: Dogtown and Z-Boys (Audio CD)
I love the music from the movie. It's all of the songs I loved as a kid. When I see the "soundtrack", it doesn't have the songs on there that I wanted in the first place. Like most reviewers of this CD, I will have to complete it myself.
The Devo close, "Gut Feeling", was so important in portraying a change in an era from hard-rock in the '70's to new wave in the '80's. It was ALMOST THE most important part of the movie from a cultural point of view. Stacy Peralta's film is pure genius. I wish it never ended.

3.0 out of 5 stars for beginners of 60s-70s rock, September 2, 2002
This review is from: Dogtown and Z-Boys (Audio CD)
Listen to it as an introductory album to the 60s-70s rock, rather than as the Dogtown soundtrack. If you've always wondered what Jimi Hendrix's and Alice Cooper's music sounded like, this album would give you a very very basic, must-have idea of that musical era.

4.0 out of 5 stars OLD SCHOOL ROCKERS TEAR YOU A NEW ONE...., May 23, 2006
This review is from: Dogtown and Z-Boys (Audio CD)
NINE OUT OF TEN SONGS ARE NECESSARY TO HAVE IN YOUR COLLECTION.
Kids, kids, kids... these are rare gems that you may not have in your collection... Rock and Roll Balls. Impress your friends with mind blowing riffs!
There are two different movies, and two different soundtracks. DOGTOWN AND Z BOYS was the documentary movie, and heres the deal with bitchin soundtracks.
Both are excellent collections of music. This, being the soundtrack to the documentary, and in my opinion the better disc.. even though it is shorter. You should check out the soundtrack to the the other film to, as it has some good old acid metal and seventies punk, mixed up with some newer punk bands covering classics.
This particular disc though contains ten choice seventies rockers, that you more than likely won't find on any TIME LIFE SOUNDS OF THE SEVENTIES collection (except maybe MAGGIE MAY, but whatever... you may like that tune anyway.., I don't, but you might.)
The rest is straight from the goldmine. Underground rockers from a time when rock was truly bad ass. HENDRIX version of EASY RIDER is a nasty way to kick things off. Then we just get smashed with cuts from THE NUGE, THE COOP, THIN LIZZY, ZZ TOP, THE STOOGES, T.REX... JOE WALSH( who is kind of a goon, but the represented track is cool)...

I dunno what more I can say on this. The music will do the talking. This is a great door to some of the more unsurfaced seventies rock (check out the other soundtrack to LORDS OF DOGTOWN).. its the OLD SCHOOL sh**. Either bust out your bananna board, or cruise some Daisy Dukes down at the surf bro.. but make sure this disc is LOUD!
