Great product until the battery dies,
By Code Monkey "G. Roy" (Connecticut) - See all my reviews Oh well, guess i will try a new brand.... 07/07/2010 - UPDATE - well I returned my collar to Cabellas a couple of times now, luckily for me there is a Cabellas store near me and they will take my returns whenever for whatever reason. Looks like I will keep returning this every 6-8 months.

You see alot of bad reviews regarding collars in general, but dogtras are just as bad as even the cheap ones, not that that is a good reason to buy either, just dont get suckered by the price, you're certainly not going to get good customer service for it.

Purchased this to start off leash training with my German Shepherd. He also wanted to dart out of the home every time the door was open and would force his way through people to do so. One correction was issued with the Dogtra and now he sits by the door and waits for his leash and I no longer fear him running out into the streets and getting hit.
I personally tried the unit on my arm before using it on my dog (I figure I should know exactly what he is going through) and honestly, setting 50 out of the 127 is more than adequate and equates to someone plucking a hair off your arm. Probably the best investment I have made yet for my dog. Also, compared to the other units, the battery re-charge time is amazing, 2 hours or less versus 14-16 on the lower end units, and the range is amazing for such a small unit.

While this seems like a great collar with all of the most advanced features of any e-collar on the market, I would highly advise you to stay away. The very expensive Lithium Polymer batteries die after a short time, and cost $70 dollars to replace. You have to send the unit back to dogtra to get them replaced. It is ridiculous to have to have lithium batteries changed this often. This is a poor design feature of the collar/charger and is unacceptable. I have had the collar under 2 years and do not use it very much. I would say I charge it about once a month. These batteries have lasted less than 24 recharge cycles, LiPo batteries should have a recharge cycle life in the high hundreds, if not thousands... I got about 20. I spoke to a manager at Dogtra and his response was basically, too bad, so sad, give me your credit card number. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COLLAR!

I have a 5 month old German Sheperherd (Ruger) who is in constant training. I have had him since he was 2 months old. At four months I decided that Ruger needed more intense training from a different angle. I have done numerous research on K-9 training and found the professional trainers use shock collars. I was against the idea, however after seeing the result from other dog owners i decided to research the best brand. To my conclusion, Dogtra was a reputable company for durability and reliability. The Dogtra that i purchased was not the most expensive but it was not cheap either. The features that i was looking for were, rechargeable, wheather proof, durability, range, and variety of levels of shock. For the most part, the reviews on the Dogtra were all 5 stars. I found the cheapest and most reliable seller and tried my luck. After a month of training, my GSD is learning faster than ever and i get keep my voice. I figured dog trainer's cost just as much as the Dogtra. I research dog training techniques on the internet/youtube and utilize the Dogtra to train Ruger. So far, so good. I am a happy customer and i have recommended this tool to many dog owners at the dog park.

We have a large 18 month old German Shepherd. He has been through obedience training and is a well trained dog. That said, I wouldn't take him outside without this great collar on him. It gives you precise control over your dog for walks, playing, dog parks, etc. I almost never use the "nick" button and have not ever used the continous button. The simple "vibrate" button seems to connect my commands with my dogs actions. Usually just picking up the remote is enough for him to realize it's time to improve his obedience and respond to my commands. Our trainer, a top K9 trainer who trains many working dogs for service and police, recommended this collar to us. It's been a great tool and our dog is happier because it allows him to understand what is being asked of him.
