Book Description

December 21, 2004 0324223269 978-0324223262 1
In the next 20 years, citizens over the age of 65 will outnumber children for the first time. America's labor force is not only growing older, it's also ushering in a whole new set of work force issues to tackle - including an impending labor shortage. By 2010 there will be 169 million jobs in the United States, but only 159 million workers to undertake them - a 10 million worker shortfall! Exhaustively researched, masterfully written, and extremely informative - this book candidly and comprehensively lays out the statistics of the graying labor pool, the implications for business organizations, and suggested solutions and strategies. It helps organizations plan and position for the changing labor market, offering strategies to help companies effectively compete for the best and the brightest of the shrinking labor pool. It also explores how to leverage the strengths of older workers, slowdown strategies, phased retirement, rehiring, and much more. It's a must read for business owners, executives, HR professionals, consultants - any anyone responsible for staffing and business strategy.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Critchley's book is superb-stressing the importance of addressing changes in workforce demographics and accomodating an aging workforce to ensure that organizations excel."

"Bob has done it again. This is practical insight at it's best. Reading Bob's book has been such a pleasure. Having been in the HR consulting/development business for 30 years now, the greatest testimonial I can give this book is, the level of excitement and anticipation derived the further I got into the book. My adrenalin was flowing. There was a crispness and freshness about this book. Bob has successfully managed to clearly outline paths to successful strategies in a very balanced manner. While each individual and organization must map out their own strategy, Bob outlines a structure and process that will assure the greatest possible success when applied."

Creative employment strategies designed to leverage the talents of a diverse multi-generational workforce is smart business. This book provides an insight into strategy and practical solutions to make it happen."

"I read the book and it is absolutely in line with my beliefs of the importance of addressing the changing world of work. The good news is that careers can be extended over a succession of cycles in life for the benefit of both employer and employee. This book helps leaders to understand their role in managing people's careers under a new environment to have them committed to the success of their organizations."

"Bob Critchley does an excellent job of bracing (or warning) organizations for the inevitable changes in workforce demographics. The message is clear and compelling. Organizations that embrace these changes will win. Doing nothing is a losing strategy."

5.0 out of 5 stars Do the math and observe the restoring economy, December 30, 2004
This review is from: Doing Nothing is NOT an Option!: Facing the Imminent Labor Crisis (Hardcover)
The next 5-7 years will be a recruiting and retention nightmare for organizations if they fail to be employers-of-choice to boomers facing retirement age. Many need or want to continue working, which is good news for the workplace, since there are only 54 million Xers to fill the 76 million places boomers now occupy. Critchley lays it all out and helps us confront the challenge. His message is timely, clear and actionable. Reading his latest book is not an option.
