This volume collects two works by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The title work, The Doings of Raffles Haw (1891), is scientific romance about a disenchanted gold maker who has discovered a way to turn lead into solid gold and uses his wealth to help people. But when he sees that his philanthropic activities don't benefit anyone, he becomes disillusioned. The other story, Our Lady of Death, presents cultural and religious conflicts.

About the Author

Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh in 1859. Sent off to boarding school, he cut his teeth as a story-teller amusing his schoolmates with tales and writing letters home to his mother.He practiced medicine and, in 1900, volunteered as a medic in Africa during the Boer War – he was later knighted for his service. Doyle lost a son, two brothers in law, and two nephews to the Great War. He is remembered for the Sherlock Holmes stories and his novel The Lost World. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Does money, great whacks of it, destroy every thing and every one it touches, even those who start with the best intentions ? The story centers around a new-comer to town, the mysterious Raffle Haw, his obvious riches and his desire to use his fortune for the good of the people. The provenance of the money is slowly revealed to the reader (you will have to smile at the science of that one !) as the consequences of Haw's philanthropy develop. Well written, nicely spaced story-line, believable caracters, this book has it all.

Raffles Haw is the new guy in town and the whole population is atwitter with gossip. When his home is overtaken by workmen and strange boxes are seen coming and going, it only adds to the intrigue. Robert and Laura are his nearest neighbors and are soon delighted to meet this eccentric new addition to the small English town.

When the brother and sister pair find out how filthy rich Haw is they swear to remain untouched by his wealth. That much money, though? What would you do?

This is an interesting short read (free on Kindle) about the the love of money and how that love can corrupt a soul. Those words ring true still today (this book would make an awesome reality TV show!). The is a story very much like something Jules Verne would write with some interesting tidbits about inventions and chemistry in the pursuit of gold and power. If you like Doyle and Victorian literature, it's a fun read.

Even though you know how it's all going to end. That much money? What would you do?
