Rafael Rabello/Paulo Moura,
By
This review is from: Dois Irmaos (Audio CD)
This recording ("Dios Irmaos" or "Two Brothers") pairs the talents of two popular Brazilian instrumentalists: clarinetist Paulo Moura and virtuoso guitarist (on 6- and 7-string guitar) Rafael Rabello, who died at only 35. They apparently recorded this disc in a single day, putting the arrangements together as they went. Occasionally it sounds like it, but most of the time it's a remarkable meshing of two virtuoso performers.

A gorgeous album, pretty and mellow,

Beautiful! Highly recommended. Although there is only one song by Pixinguinha on here ("1 X 0"), this can be seen as a warmup for Moura's lauded "Pixinguinha" album of 1998. This is "choro" music at its best -- and at its warmest. These duets are much less rigorously arrranged than on the '98 album; Moura's clarinet work is sensitive and nuanced, with a wide dynamic range. He slides from mournful to majestic, constantly urged on by Rabello's guitar work, which is dead-on perfect throughout. It's a very nice record, maybe a little hard to find these days, but well worth looking for.

This is a wonderful CD, so wonderful that my friends tend to borrow it and never return it! Great mood music for any party, dinner, evening at home.
