5.0 out of 5 stars No mess
No more cracking my eggs on the side of the pan...I used to get drips on the stove, shells in the pan, or a broken yolk. Now I get a perfect, sharp crack every time.

2.0 out of 5 stars It does work, but still........
I like the concept behind this product.....it's basically a razor blade held in such a position that you can whack an egg across it for a nice clean break. However, it's fairly big (relative to it's purpose) and takes up quite a bit of room in the gadget drawer and is just another thing to clean. So for that reason I'll probably shove it in the back of a cabinet and pull...

4.0 out of 5 stars Chip-free scrambled eggs from a neat little gadget, April 24, 2010
This review is from: Egg Cracker
Ok. This is NOT for the kitchen pro who can crack eggs with one hand and plop them, shell-free, into a pan or bowl. If you are an adept at this art, the Egg Cracker would be an insulting gift and you would most likely toss it into the trash with a scornful twist of your lower lip.

Even though I am the omelet-meister at home, I STILL cannot crack eggs one-handed. I will admit, I have to pick out considerable amounts of shell from my beaten egg mixes. So for me, this little device is a pretty cool notion.

So what is The Egg Cracker? It is a 3 inch high black stand with an egg-shaped flat platform on top. A sharp steel blade sits across the platform. You remove the flexible plastic cover that protects the blade during storage and you bash your egg on the blade. Pick up the egg, open it over your bowl or pan. The sharp blade cuts the shell with minimal flakes or chips.

The stand has a drain hole for any egg white that might get stuck on the platform. Just rinse the egg cracker and wash away any egg white or yolk. Dry, pop on the cover, and you are done.

Who would benefit from this gadget?

1. Klutzes (like me) who get routinely have to pick out shell fragments from their eggs.

2. Cooks who seem to purchase only the kind of eggs that want to fragment like antique porcelain teacups.

3. Anyone obsessed with making a beautifully linear crack in an egg for some deeply-seated but mysterious psychological reason.

4. If you just can't resist kitchen gadgets or seen-on-tv inventions.

Necessary? Probably not. Cool? Yes. I did use it when making a huge family omelet and it was handy to crack the large number of eggs. When I next make a souffle or sponge cake, I'll certainly be happy to use it. And I didn't have to pull out a single shell fragment.

I like the concept behind this product.....it's basically a razor blade held in such a position that you can whack an egg across it for a nice clean break. However, it's fairly big (relative to it's purpose) and takes up quite a bit of room in the gadget drawer and is just another thing to clean. So for that reason I'll probably shove it in the back of a cabinet and pull it out if I need to crack a dozen eggs or so.....but to crack a couple eggs to make a cake? No way.

There are a few holes/slits on the underside, and it appeared that if you flipped it over and poured in your newly cracked egg then it could serve a dual purpose as a yolk/white separator, unfortunately it didn't work to well.

One last note, someone mentioned that their kids could use it - maybe if your kids are teenagers, but this is definitely not something that you want younger kids to have access to!

Item works fine, not sure I would buy it again but I love gadgets and, unlike a lot that I buy, this one works as advertised. Makes one-handed egg cracking a cinch even for a klutz like me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for cooking with kids!!!!!!, February 2, 2010
This review is from: Egg Cracker
This is simple to use and mess free way to crack eggs! So easy even my 10 year old uses it when making scrambled eggs. There is no "razor blade" attached to the top, so it's safe and simple. It's great when baking too. I highly recommend it.

This is a great kitchen gadget. Effective, fun and much better to use than the edge of the countertop.

I am a klutz opening the organic eggs my wife likes to buy. They tend to have thin shells and easily broken yolks. (They also tend to be small, but that's not germane here). So I was usually winding up with scrambled eggs seasoned with eggshells when I wanted fried eggs. I found this egg cracker easy to use right out of the box, and so far not a single broken yolk nor any eggshell seasoning. Great product for a klutz like me!

4.0 out of 5 stars Egg Cracker for the Man of the House, January 31, 2011

This review is from: Egg Cracker
I bought this egg cracker for my husband. He occasionally will make me a quick bread from a mix for my breakfast; and they ALWAYS have eggshells in them. After reading the various reviews, I decided that this would be the best choice.
It works well enough. It's a sharp blade that you just whack the egg on. The only criticism I have is that it's fairly expensive. It does the job OK. It's a fairly large unit, too.
If you're desperate for something to eliminate the shells, then this might be the answer for you!
