Book Description

October 2, 2012
Rising soccer stars are transformed into fashion icons and champions in these sensuous black-and-white photographs shot by renowned designer Domenico Dolce. Acclaimed fashion designer Domenico Dolce—working behind the camera as a photographer for the first time—assembles a virtual gallery of up-and-coming athletes from the world of soccer. Some are already well-known faces, such as Alexandre Pato, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Fabio Borini, and Stephan El Shaarawy, whereas others are champions and stars of the future. Dolce’s stylishly exotic photographs reveal the men’s power and charm, their masculinity and hidden sensitivity. In these intimate profiles of sixty-seven international players, Dolce uses a spare white background and his innate sense of style to bring out each player’s unique personality and natural charisma. The book is a highly personal portfolio, featuring an introduction by Marcello Lippi, the Italian World Cup–winning manager, commentaries from journalists and editors from around the world, and Dolce’s own thoughts on his work. Dolce has used glamour to enhance the beauty of men throughout his career. This handsome volume is the product of his very personal and candid search to create a unique synthesis between the world of sports and glamour. Proceeds from the sale of the books will go to AriSLA, Agenzia di Ricerca per la Sclerosi Laterale Amiotrofica (the Italian Research Foundation for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis).

Some people will continue to purchase anything that bears a `upscale label' whether the product itself is genuine or a well-disguised copy and whether or not the item of the day is needed. That is the way the big label companies capture the crowd of ready spenders. And that is the problem with this very costly black and white photography book by Dolce & Gabbana. Take a very popular `in' sport (soccer) and celebrate it with a named company, creating photographs of famous and perhaps tomorrow-famous men and voila! DOLCE & GABBANA CAMPIONI.

The book is the art of fashion designer Domenico Dolce who apparently is making his first foray as an art photography practitioner. The results are mediocre in technique, with every photograph having a sameness about it - all white background, clothed and partially clothed athletes - many so young and skinny they don't seem to have developed the necessary muscularity found in trained athletes. Toss in the big name in the soccer field - Alexandre Pato, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Fabio Borini, Stephan El Shaarawy and others - and that is the extent of the images of 67 players form around the world. 500 pages for $200.00 (less if purchased here on Amazon.com) with some additive notes from Marcello Lippi, journalists and Domenico Dolce's own insights in essay form.

Being advertised as a one edition only book, for those who gravitate toward important label names and status, this book is likely to become a collectors' item. The question arises, is it worth the pricey tag? Grady Harp, November 12

I like Dolce & Gabbana as designers ,, but once again this book lacks any sort or creative direction and the images are really very boring. I think that now that photography has become as easy as pointing ones phone that everyone thinks they can be a photographer .. But this is not true. This book show no insight on the ability of photography as well as the models are not built in any sort of athletic way.. vrey skinny.. but most of all the art direction is really non existing and lack luster.. I am often shocked at how poorly something could be . I would never buy this book again.
