From the Manufacturer

The all new Dolica GX650 65-inch aluminum alloy tripod and B204 ball head is a complete support system for your camera (SLR with lens, and/or DSLR with lens).  It is designed to be lightweight, portable, and stable for any and every occasion.

The Tripod is composed of Anodized Aluminum Alloy (AAA) and Plastic Polymer Composite (PPC).  The combination of both materials maximizes the size and reinforced stability it provides to make every photo-shoot perfect.

We also provide the comfort of using NBR foam grips for extreme weather conditions.  The comfort grips are nice because you can have a tight grip and know that the tripod will NOT slip from your hands.  In extreme weather conditions in a climate of below 30 degrees any metal will be unbearably cold and in an environment that has a temperature of above 90 degrees will heat any metal making it uneasy to maneuver your tripod and that is why we offer the standard of NBR foam grips to this special tripod.

The sleek ball head includes a quick release plate with a 3/8 inch mount for cameras.  It attaches to the ball head with a safety lock to prevent the camera from slipping off and falling while loosening your quick release plate.  While you have you camera attached to the quick release plate and ball head, you can pan 360 degree and tilt up to 90 degree.  You can also attach a lens (i.e. 200mm f/4) mount to the quick release plate and have the comfort of stabilizing with confidence.

The upgraded GX650 tripod has its professional function and additional upgraded features.  The three major features are: four level positioning, interchangeable spike/rubber feet, and a dual purpose mount.  Uneven surface can be a big issue for many photographers and that is why we engineered our tripod with four levels for high to low level shots.  You have the freedom to position each individual leg from a standard position to adjusting each leg at four-different levels.  To decrease the chance of slippage, use rubber feet for soft surface, and spike rubber feet for rugged terrain.  You can remove the hook from the dual purpose counter weight hook mount from the bottom of the center column, remove the center column, insert the counter weight hook mount on the top of the tripod (attach the camera), adjust each individual leg to ground level, and you’re ready to shoot extremely low macro-shots.

The GX650B204 is completely, reliable, portable, and ready to use for your next photo-shoot!

I love this tripod, which replaces an aluminum Bogen that I've had for years. The tripod sets up quickly, and unlike the experience of another reviewer, mine is perfectly level when the legs are at full extension. There were no flaws, no loose screws, and this is an unbelievably versatile tripod compared to what I had before. I use this for travel and hiking. It is a little on the heavier side than some of the other aluminum tripods on the market, but it is rock solid. It is extremely stable even with the center column fully extended. I love the degree markings on the head, perfect for stitching panoramic shots. The feet have metal spikes, but also rubber feet that will screw down over the spikes for indoor work. The only reason I titled this review "almost perfect" is that if the tripod had a removable handle for rotating the ball hand, for panning for example, it would be perfect. I spent a LOT of time researching all the tripods available in the market now (12/1/2011) and I found this to be the best mix of value, versatility, and quality.

I don't always use a tripod, but when I do, I usually need it to take portraits for a family with small children who don't want to look at the camera. Being a one-man-crew, I try to pop out from behind the lens and make them smile/laugh and look at the camera... which is impossible without a tripod. In addition to the above, I occasionally do some urban photography, residential and landscapes - but not too often. I already have a studio tripod, and while incredibly stable, it also weighs about 20lb and folds down to about 36" long. So bearing that in mind, here's my must haves:

1) Needs to be light enough for me to carry all over creation without too much trouble ~ 4lb
2) Needs to be tall enough for me (6ft 5in) to operate comfortably
3) Needs to be sturdy enough to hold a large DSLR and long lens ~ 15lb load
4) Needs to fold down to a relatively short length ~ 25"
5) Needs to be stable enough to do longer exposures (2-3 sec) in real world conditions
6) Needs to be under $100 with a decent ball head
7) Needs to look and feel professional. No embarrassment factor.
8) Needs to be durable enough to be used regularly (but gently) while still working reliably

If you look at that list, it's pretty tough to find anything that works for under $250, and even then, it often falls short on one area or another: It's really sturdy, but weighs 10 pounds. It's light and compact, but only extends to 55 inches. You get the idea.

I had tried the Ravelli Professional 65" with the ball head ($40) and wasn't impressed. Yes, it was a great find for someone with a smaller camera - it knocked the socks off of the Best Buy garbage - but it really wasn't sturdy enough. The legs had too much flex, the ball head was a bit undersized for my DSLR.

Spent hours researching tripods of this size looking for something to take my photography to the next level. I'm an advanced amateur that was trying to step up from my cheap Slik U112 to something with some heft that allowed different heads and stood at normal shooting heights of 5-6ft. I ordered hoping this would fit the bill but sadly its still undersized for a decent SLR and lens. The smallest legs at full extension bend way too much and they don't have enough spread to make you comfortable that a stiff wind or slightly odd terrain wouldn't topple it over. The head isn't bad and actually tracked better than expected for the price. Unfortunately its not that middle ground between cheap/small tripods and quailty $300 profesional heft. Dolica just doesn't have anything until you step up to carbon. I ended up with a Manfrotto 290 series combo that ran about $150 that met the criteria. It's smallest legs are 26mm compared to the dainty 18mm of this tripod.

I never understood the insane amount people pay for some tripods...upwards of $200 just for a ball head...really? this isn't an L series lens we're talking about. That said, I was still a little skeptical at the very affordable price of this one. I have to say I could not be more impressed...it's very sturdy, well built, easy to use and hold my T2i and my rather heavy 200mm F/2.8 quite well. I definitely recommend

I'm not a professional photographer by any means but this tripod is 20x better than anything I have found in local stores, aside from overpriced camera shops. Qaulity is excellent and seems very durable. The few times I have used it, the tripod has been nothing short of amazing! The only thing I think I miss with this particular tripod is the lever/handle you have on others to allow you to pan your camera. Not a big deal for my dslr but would have been nice for the video camera as I think they eliminate a little shake panning this way rather than moving your camera. It was still obvious by the pictures that this was without one so it's not too big of a deal. Awesome construction and functionality otherwise!
I forgot to mention that when this was delivered someone walked off with my package. I spent a couple days on the phone with the post office to confirm that it was delivered and it was. I got on the live chat with an Amazon Rep and he was so helpful and thorough. He had a replacement item shipped out within a few hours and it was at my door the following day! I was so worried I'd have to jump through hoops to get another one and was elated that I still had it at my door before I left town (the same day it was delivered) and planned on originally using it! Awesome customer service Amazon!!
