Editorial Reviews

From the Artist

"On a Broadway Stage, Kevin Cahoon is the Childcatcher, a menacing, heavily made-up creature in black who scares small children in 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.'
On a downtown club stage, Mr. Cahoon is the lead singer for a glam rock band called Kevin Cahoon and Ghetto Cowboy, a menacing, heavily made-up punk rocker."
- The New York Times

5.0 out of 5 stars Glam is dead! Long live Glam!, January 19, 2006
By
This review is from: Doll (Audio CD)
Ziggy Stardust meets Broadway? First of all - the voice! It's a bit squeaky, very expressive and with a perfect pronunciation. This guy seems to be a professional singer. And, as we know, he is. Kevin Cahoon is a well known Musical star. And with his Band, "Ghetto Cowboy", he's now also launching a career in Rock Music.
So, can he do anything wrong? Let's say, no. And yes.

Here's my main point of critics: The songs - well, let's be honest - could be more inventive. It's typical Rock-Music in a 70ties-style with not too inspired lyrics. Topics like queerness, fashion, sex and space are well known ingredients of the glam-stew.

Also the music reminds of classic artists of this era - early Bowie, T-Rex, early Roxy Music and even a little bit Iggy Pop. But maybe even more Gary Glitter and the Sweet.
And I cannot resist the impression, that the whole album is meant as a tribute to the great days of glam - or, having the biography of the artist in mind, as a part of a soundtrack to some musical about those days. The included real-life-sounds support this thought.

The rating...
On the one hand I am tempted to subtract one of the stars because of - in my eyes - too much retroness. Bands like Louis XIV are one step ahead, how to combine good old glam with some more modern appeal and a weird Indie-touch.
On the other hand it is unique! I think at the moment there's nothing similar on the scene: A little bit tacky glam played in an absolutely sophisticated way.
Like it or not, but what they did, they did very well. So why expect Kevin Cahoon and his Ghetto Cowboys to be something they maybe never wanted to be?
Nevertheless I do hope that the next album will be a little bit more courageous...

After all, it's a highly entertaining, funny album and I guess, wonderful Party-stuff to make people smile and dance.
And, last but not least, this music is made to be played live. Check out the little videos of live-gigs on www.kevincahoon.com. They are just small and blurry, but still absolutely stunning. Kevin is a true entertainer. You will immediately love the performance and search the web for live-Gigs in your surrounding. (I'm still waiting...)

My favourites: "fashionista" (no. 3), "good time gone bad" (no. 5) and "star ballad" (no. 9)
[to avoid confusion: Track 1 is just a short intro without any lyrics - so Track 2 - is the first song "doll" on the CD]
