Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Cate's not sure just what she expected . . . but she knows it certainly wasn't this.

When Cate Kinkaid receives a frantic call about a triple homicide, she drives to the scene against her better judgment--aren't triple homicides more up the police department's alley?--only to find that the victims are not quite who she expects. Now she has a new rule to add to everything she's learned in her short stint as an assistant private investigator: always find out if the victims have human DNA. Because these three do not.

But who would shoot this nice lady's dolls? What possible reason could the shooter have? And then there's the startling discovery of another victim, who definitely does have human DNA . . .

With tension that is matched only by humor, Dolled Up to Die is the exciting second book in Lorena McCourtney's Cate Kinkaid Files. You won't find a place to stop and take a breath in this fast-paced story.

"A delight to read! Loaded with eccentric characters, a wig-happy cat, and details from dining to danger on every page, this book takes you right to the scene of the crime. And you won't want to leave until you've helped Cate figure out whodunit!"--Lenora Worth, New York Times bestselling author of Love Inspired

"With a clever plot that moves rapidly, this is a definite one-day read that suspense and mystery fans will absolutely love."--Suspense Magazine

Lorena McCourtney is the New York Times bestselling and award-winning author of dozens of novels, including Dying to Read, Invisible (which won a Daphne du Maurier Award from Romance Writers of America), In Plain Sight, On the Run, and Stranded. She resides in Oregon.

I'm going to echo another reviewer who was thankful the dolls weren't too creepy. There's still an episode of Twilight Zone that I can't watch--not even the promo for it. Shudder.

But that's not what this book is about. In fact, the dolls are dead to begin with. That's how Cate gets involved. Assistant private eye, Cate Kinkaid answers the call, rushing to help a woman who claims there's been a multiple-victim shooting in her house, and the police won't come. The three victims, as it turns out, are all dolls. But it's the fourth victim that gets the police there quick. The dollmaker's ex is also found shot in the house.

The rest is all a clever cozy mystery featuring Kate, her tech savvy boyfriend, and her deaf cat Octavia. A nice inspirational message is wound in among Kate's visits to question suspects as she encounters the trophy wife, the new-age guru, the bridezilla, and the studly vintner with a record. A great cast of characters all around.

What a fun read!

It wasn't what I thought it would be and I was glad I was surprised. Too many times you watch or hear about mysteries with dolls as the background and they make the doll maker and/or dolls creepy or just too into dolls! That isn't the case with Lorena's work. I actually found great interest in the doll maker's work and I wouldn't have minded Lorena going into how the dolls are made even more. I LOVE Lorena's style of writing and immediately loved her characters. The only flaw, if you want to call it a flaw, I personally found was that I wished Cate used a little more common sense at times, was a little more observant (and I don't mean when she's in a high stress situation it made sense why she didn't "pay attention to detail" when she was fighting for her life!) and paid a little bit more attention to the things people said. There where times when I felt facts where repeated. I LOVED the high suspense scenes (especially the final one) and I loved Cate's personal life as well as her professional life. I also LOVE to read a book with a cat in it when the author knows cats! Octavia's personality is so feline fantastic! From her peering at people to having cat fits I loved every word of it, and humor is woven into this book, even the high suspense scenes, beautifully!! :) When the first in this series came out I was interested in reading it, vaguely, but never got it. So when I got the chance to read Dolled Up to Die I jumped at it, and I'm SO glad I did. I REALLY want to read the first book in this series now (so I recommend if you don't have the first one yet get them both ;) ) and one more detail I wanted to compliment Lorena on. Her witnessing! This book is SO good at relying on God to help and lead you and her characters are great examples of being Christian witnesses!Read more ›

"Dolled Up to Die" is the second of The Cate Kinkaid Files and I found it just as entertaining as the first, "Dying to Read". Cate is an assistant private investigator working for her uncle as she learns the business. Once again Cate becomes what one might describe as an accidental detective as seemingly routine investigations turn into life threatening situations.

I love Cate Kinkaid. She is both quirky and a little dingy but there is method behind her madness. She certainly has a penchant for getting in over her head but you have to admire her determination. At least she has boyfriend Mitch to help her stay grounded and watch her back. The quickly advancing plot is very clever with plenty of humor as a counterpoint to the escalating suspense. A strong message of faith is evident throughout without being too heavy-handed.

What else can I say without revealing too much? I have always enjoyed Lorena McCourtney's novels and she has definitely not lost her special touch. Do yourself a favor and pick up one or both of The Cate Kinkaid Files novels soon.

"Dolled Up to Die is the second book in the Cate Kinkaid mystery series and really can be read as a stand alone work, but honestly it's such a good cozy little mystery that you're probably going to want to go back and read the first book just because you're going to want more of these characters!

When Cate Kinkaid was hired by her uncle Joe to work as an assistant investigator for Belmont Investigations he made it perfectly clear that they only handled routine investigations such as background checks, serving subpoenas and the like, thing is it seems murder cases keep cropping up in the town of Eugene, Oregon and Cate somehow finds herself in the middle of the action! The latest call is from a woman saying there has been a triple shooting, well how can Cate not help at the scene of a triple homicide especially when the caller might still be in danger. When she arrives on the scene though she does find three victims, and quickly discovers a fourth, thing is three of the gunshot victims are life sized dolls!

"Dolled Up to Die" is one of those stories that you start reading and the next thing you know you are finished. The story moves along at such a fast pace that the pages just fly by. I love the character of Cate, she is a bumbling PI that provides more than a few laughs. She often talks to her fat cat Octavia, and is rescued more than once by her boyfriend Mitch. With several suspects the author doesn't make it easy to figure out who-dun-it with this one. Anyone who enjoys a fast paced cozy mystery with more than a few laughs and a bumbling heroine will certainly enjoy "Dolled Up to Die!"
