My advice- buy it, but buy Season 1 and Season 2 separately and you will spend only about $25.
I watched both seasons over the course of 2-weeks in 3-4 episode blocks. Truth be told, I never got into Dollhouse in real time. I think the issue was that as is the case in all JW series, the program started out slowly and I simply didn't give it the chance it deserved. Foundations are laid and characters go through several levels of evolution.
DH offers a lot to like:
1.) An interesting techno-science concept
2.) Big business run amok
3.) Eliza Dushku rocking everything from a halter to a school girl outfit to dominatrix leathers
The are plenty of plot twists, great writing and alumni from nearly every other JW series of old. Even with 1-arm and librarian glasses Summer Glau still can't help look appealing!
Thankfully, The Dollhouse does offer a series conclusion with the last episode of season 2 acting as a continuation to the last episode of season 1.
With the success of the JW written "Marvel Avengers", I can only hope that we have not seen the last of him re: TV series development.
In reality, they should have called it "Programmable" and advertised it as a global takeover conspiracy, more attuned with the film “Futureworld”.
The most interesting aspect is that there are a plethora of bad guys - which far outnumber the good guys, and none of the bad guys are slow, evil nor stupid. It is disconcerting as they go about their horrific acts to people just like a day at the office. These are the sort of characters you normally find supporting the hero back at the secret lab, but here, instead, are supporting the evil corporation against mankind.
I would be remiss if I did not point out the show would probably have done better with a different lead actress. Eliza Dushku is beautiful, talented, not afraid to be naughty on camera and is very convincing in combat rolls. Unfortunately, she also carries a chip on her shoulder the size of Mount Everest. An “America's Sweetheart” actress such as Meg Ryan would have been better for this role - someone for whom we really have empathy and concern.
Be aware that the first few episodes don't really convey the depth or complexity of the series. It's not until midway through season 1 that you really begin to understand what's going on and where this is going, so don't be put off of the first 3 or 4 episodes don't get you hooked right away. Keep watching -- it's worth the investment of time!

Another amazing Joss Whedon production. Great cast, especially Eliza Dushku. Didn't much like Faith but she really shines here! My only complaint is that it ended too soon.Published 22 months ago by Ellen Nevitt
