Grade 2-4 These three activity books offer a minimum of text and lots of bright, full-color drawings. The projects are all basic and can be completed with items found around the house. In a few cases adult assistance is required, such as with cutting heavy fabric or corrugated cardboard or sewing. Directions are easy to follow, accompanied by patterns (some of which require enlargement) and illustrations for each step. In Dollhouse Fun!, Conaway suggests creating a dollhouse by stacking corrugated boxes on their sides; decorating them with paint, markers, and gift wrap; and furnishing it with cardboard furniture. The furniture patterns are good, but often span the binding, making them somewhat difficult to reproduce. The projects in Happy Day! pillow-balls made of socks stuffed with pantyhose, an oatmeal box robot, clothespin people, and rubberband banjocan all be made from household items. There's nothing new here, but it's a good collection of ideas. The costumes in . . .Costumes and Disguises center on three variations of a tunic made from a blanket or sheet and safety pins. Accessories make the outfit, in this case either a cave dweller's skins, a medieval tunic, or a Greek toga. Burlap boots, a cardboard lyre, paper laurel wreath, and jewelry complete the look. A cardboard space suit is the only other full costume; other offerings are accessories. Happy Day! and Dollhouse Fun! are acceptable additions to most collections, but Costumes has little to offer.
