5.0 out of 5 stars I love it!, September 28, 2009
This review is from: Dollhouse Magic (Paperback)
I got this book as an adult and have read it many times while sick in bed. As a child I wished for a dollhouse and although I had one my grandmother kept it on a shelf. I wish I had, had this book then. I could have spent hours making my own furniture and even a house. I used ideas from this book when I made a dollhouse for my niece and again for my daughter. I just love this book and hope to make some of these projects with a child who shares my love for dollhouses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative fun for youngsters!, August 7, 2009
This review is from: Dollhouse Magic (Paperback)
My daughter was given this book by a little friend who already enjoyed a copy of her own, and what a fun gift it has been! The book gives so many ideas for creative ways to make dollhouse furniture out of everyday items that might otherwise be discarded: matchboxes, nutshells, scraps of cloth, empty thread spools, broken watches, caps & lids, posted stamps.... Then there are clear instructions coupled with black & white illustrations which makes assembly clear & simple. Curtains, wall hangings and other artwork, dishes & bowls, musical instruments, lamps, beds with mattresses, and so much more is included in this book, with detailed instructions for the assembly of each piece. There are nice photographs throughout as well, giving ideas for how finished items might look in actual play. The book concludes with a few ideas for things that might be used as "dollhouses" where the furniture & accessories can be utilized for play, without having to purchase a specific house. Given time and the freedom to make some mess and be creative, a child can have hours and hours of fun with this book, at little or no expense. I would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to encourage creativity in a child...or any adult with imagination who still likes to play and wonder!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this fun book!! Treasure of info, ideas!, March 15, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Sure, this is a children's book, but it is a great one chock full of ideas that can be transferred to a miniature dollhouse and diorama without much effort, if any at all. It is an old book, but the same goes for this too. I mistakenly requested it at my library not knowing it was a children's book until I went to pick it up. I decided to give it a peek and I am so glad I did. In fact, I found that I read and read it so many times that I finally purchased my own copy from Amazon and I'm so glad that I did.
It isn't a thick book at just 56 pages, and the photos are in black and white, but there is a treasure within those pages. Build a sofa out of a sponge for the living room, an easy chair, an end table or a fireplace from a simple box, you can even add stones to it for a stone fireplace. Make a clock using a button, paper and glue, a mirror from aluminum foil, and sculptures from chess pieces.
Before you even start making any mini's it tells you what to save. Those simple things that even miniature enthusiasts might ignore, or not. Basic tools and materials are delved into. Then, the author takes you room by room to makes those things to fill the home. Oh sure, this is written for children with that type of dollhouse in mind, but why not adapt it for the adult miniature dollhouse? Isn't that what miniaturist's do anyway? Adapt normal everyday household items to fill a dollhouse?
Personally, I love this book and will use it as a guide to make some things in it for my dollhouse mansion. It's so easy to follow. I have no problem recommending it to anyone that makes mini's.
