Book Description

September 2003
Christina Harris has applied her significant dressmaking talents to creating a great new collection of dolls' clothes to make.

Whether looking for an everyday outfit, or a really special ensemble to display their favourite doll in, the enthusiast will find plenty of choice here. There are designs for dolls sized from 14 inches to 24 inches, both adult and child styles, in all of the most popular period fashions. From the Victorian era comes a walking out costume, a smart travelling coat complete with astrakhan trim, and an enchanting nightdress with mop cap. There's a classic Edwardian Norfolk tweed suit and a stylish leg 'o mutton sleeved jacket with matching skirt. Twentieth-century styles feature fashions from the 1920s and 30s, as well as a glamorous 1950s 'Prom' dress. All the designs are versatile, as the author's sketched variations on the made-up outfits will show. Finally, the chapter featuring storybook characters such as Scarlett O'Hara, Dorothy from the Land of Oz, and Rapunzel provides that something extra special.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Versitale, Unique, and Lovely Book, January 23, 2010
This review is from: The Dolls' Clothes Collection (Paperback)
I checked out this book from a local library and am now looking to own her second book. I love the historical accuracy of the patterns, the variety of dolls and sizes, the details and how it includes instructions for the complete look, not just the clothes on top. It includes historical details about what type of fabric and what color certain garments would be made out of, and patterns for the dress, the bloomers, the camisole, the slippers, and the hat! I own a modern doll and with a little adjustment I was able to make some really beautiful garments for my doll based on these patterns and instructions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected, November 7, 2011

This book is better than I expected! It is very well illustrated and shows a lot of nice and complete outfits. It also includes a section with vintage undergarments and accesories (this was a surprise for me). It is excellent as a source of inspiration because the clothes depicted on each chapter are very accurate and imaginative, and not just an historic reproduction. You can also find a lot of suggestions on how to adapt the patterns to create your own fashions. Basically, I bought this book together with Rosemarie Ionker's "A Closetful of Doll Clothes" to sew nice outfits for my 20 months daughter, who I like to dress like a doll. Since I have been sewing for more than 20 years, the explanations and instructions are clear enough for me. But these two books are not for everyone. The very beginners will need some basic dress and patternmaking skills to interpret and carry out some of the outfits showned, to adjust sizes and make finishes. I would have just enjoyed some more step by step pictures on finishings and trimmings. Anyway, I am very happy and I am thinking of getting Christina Harris next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Notch, June 7, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Dolls' Clothes Collection (Paperback)
Christina Harris' "The Dolls' Clothes Collection" is a delight. She goes into detail from undergarments to outer garments. I like that she takes the pattern a step further to show a completely different look from the same pattern. Patterns start in the 1800's thru the 1950's. The nautical look is always a classic. One of my favorite resource books.
