A Versitale, Unique, and Lovely Book,
This review is from: The Dolls' Clothes Collection (Paperback)
I checked out this book from a local library and am now looking to own her second book. I love the historical accuracy of the patterns, the variety of dolls and sizes, the details and how it includes instructions for the complete look, not just the clothes on top. It includes historical details about what type of fabric and what color certain garments would be made out of, and patterns for the dress, the bloomers, the camisole, the slippers, and the hat! I own a modern doll and with a little adjustment I was able to make some really beautiful garments for my doll based on these patterns and instructions.

Better than I expected,

This book is better than I expected! It is very well illustrated and shows a lot of nice and complete outfits. It also includes a section with vintage undergarments and accesories (this was a surprise for me). It is excellent as a source of inspiration because the clothes depicted on each chapter are very accurate and imaginative, and not just an historic reproduction. You can also find a lot of suggestions on how to adapt the patterns to create your own fashions. Basically, I bought this book together with Rosemarie Ionker's "A Closetful of Doll Clothes" to sew nice outfits for my 20 months daughter, who I like to dress like a doll. Since I have been sewing for more than 20 years, the explanations and instructions are clear enough for me. But these two books are not for everyone. The very beginners will need some basic dress and patternmaking skills to interpret and carry out some of the outfits showned, to adjust sizes and make finishes. I would have just enjoyed some more step by step pictures on finishings and trimmings. Anyway, I am very happy and I am thinking of getting Christina Harris next book.

Christina Harris' "The Dolls' Clothes Collection" is a delight. She goes into detail from undergarments to outer garments. I like that she takes the pattern a step further to show a completely different look from the same pattern. Patterns start in the 1800's thru the 1950's. The nautical look is always a classic. One of my favorite resource books.

There are some really adorable outfits portrayed. The outfits are more vintage style. I especially liked the sailor suit and the poodle skirt. Lots of patterns of clothes along with patterns for hats and shoes which are SO cute. Recommend to doll maker.

I bought this book wanting to make glorious doll clothes like those shown on the cover. It was a bit of a let down, because you had to have the actual dolls to size the clothes on. Directions might read "measure the dolls waist and add a half an inch". I ended up selling the book to a doll shop owner because it did not fit my needs.

Not the best.,

I sold this book to a local doll shop. You must have some of the doll's to make the clothes. Directions will read "Measure the waist of the doll plus add an inch." This didn't help me much. However, if you need male doll clothes (hard to find) it is a good resource.
