5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Doll
I disagree with some reviewers before me. I bought my POTW S. Africa Barbie at a local store and she is actually PRETTIER than pics shown here on Amazon. I love her dark dark skin, and her hair style can be fashionably modern. If you're a collector into redressing, she does well in many nice outfits. Her makeup is beautiful and can look good with contemperory clothing...

3.0 out of 5 stars Dolls of the World: Princess of South Africa
BRAVO, BRAVO Mattel! This doll is simply beautiful! The accuracy of the light playing off the dark skin tone is wonderful. The close-up is breathtaking. The "Princess" is really beautiful, and the make-up only enhances her beauty. Mattel has truly achieved diversity and inclusion. They have moved beyond the old days, and the average manufacturers, who just make 'em...

I love her dark dark skin, and her hair style can be fashionably modern. If you're a collector into redressing, she does well in many nice outfits. Her makeup is beautiful and can look good with contemperory clothing too. Though, the whites in her eyes are somewhat dark (I take it's due to the real dark vinyl behind a regular layer of white paint), but that is sometimes true with real dark black people. It doesn't effect the doll's beauty at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing!, April 2, 2003

The Priness of South Africa Barbie is refreshing. I am an African America Woman and I wish my granddaughter to experience what I didn't. I want her to have dolls that look black, for it teaches her to like the way she looks. I loved the Priness of South Africa's full lips. She is not a white looking doll with brown paint, instead she is a doll that reflects Africa features.

This will be my Christmas gift for both kids and adults this year. I love this doll!

The Princess/Dolls of the World series is one of Mattels' best Barbie lines becuase it exposes all people to different cultures. This doll is outstanding. Her beautiful face is exquisite and very serene. The outfit is made of the finest fabrics and the vibrant colors are totally on que for an African Princess. I hope Mattel also does other African regions (so far the only other doll from the Continent of Africa was the beautiful Eqyptian Princess). Lastly I'm glad we have this forum to voice our opinons and not everyone will agree, but one thing we must remember is everyones opinon is valid whether someone believes it's honest or not.

What a beautiful doll. The fabrics choosen for her outfit are so vivid and very realistic. This doll is a steal for her price. She has a new black/African face mold that has only been used on Byron Lars' Mblili and the now sold out black version of Society Girl. Her skin tone is very dark and beautiful like black silk, and her face paint is done in neutral tones with slight hints of gold. I'm happy to report that this doll features the Shani Body (Shani,Asha and Nichelle was a group of black dolls that Mattel produced in the 90's)with its smaller bust, sexier muscular legs with slimmer hips and a smaller waist that twists on a slight angle. The Princess's soft curly hair is pulled back and secured with her head bands. The doll is excellent as is but she is also wonderful redressed as she looks good in everything. Mattel this doll is an easy FIVE STARS. Her beauty along with her presentation and the History on the back of the box are sure to educate a lot more people. Clearly number ONE so far in this Princess of the World series. Thanks Mattel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disparity ..., April 19, 2003

I've been researching "Princess of South Africa" before it went into stores. However, the one portrayed here ... is very different from the original that Mattel show-cased - especially in the hair and ear-rings. The Mattel version is much more beautiful - and African looking (okay, coming from KwaZulu-Natal ... I'm biased) - especailly with her close cropped hair - a true Ndebele feature, as opposed to the "woolly" style! All in all I rate this product ... = "4" verses Mattel's = "5". How about a little honesty???

Wow! This is truly a doll to cherish. When you first set your eyes upon her, she stares at you with mesmerizing copper eyes which is enhanced by her ebony skin. Her body type is exactly like the other two princesses in this third installment. She wears a black and white dress which has a very interesting pattern of diamonds and other designs. Her whole neck is enshrouded with golden rings which match the rings on her ankles(these are removable, which is attached to her like Princess of Egypt's azure and golden bracelets) . Three larger and different colored rings also adorn her neck which are loose and removable. Her short curly black hair is topped with two golden bands trimmed with yellow and pink which are sewed tightly to her hair. She also come with large golden hoop earrings which adds a look of greater power to her.She also carries a mace that is attached to her hand by rubberbands and decorated with black markings that match her dress and a turquoise colored sphere which matches one of her large neck rings. A six hued removable ngurara cape wraps this lovely princess. I rate her the second best in this installment!

So many people are saying that this doll is ugly and really when it is summed up, they're only saying it because she's so dark. I believe that it is refreshing to see such a dark doll on the market because believe me, not all black people are caramel-colored like Christie. I think they are looking at the doll through Westerinzed eyes, and that isn't fair, because she may be very dark, but she is very beautiful. Look at her. I mean REALLY look at her. She's a beautiful doll and is from Africa. I agree that not all Africans are that dark, but I think it is extremely excellent to have such a dark and somewhat natural doll on the market. Even her hair shows African pride! It would be a great addition to any doll collection.

This doll is so beautiful.. Congratulations Mattel!! You have created a wonderful toy as well as a stunning collectible! I'm a collector and Princess Barbie of South Africa draws admiring glances and wonderful commentary -- standing proudly among her much more expensive and "rare friends" :)

I think this a beautiful doll. I myself am white, and a I can tell you that not all white people have the same skin tone. We range from fair skinned, to rather light porcelain type skin, to even darker biege type skin. No one race has the same color range, and that is a good thing. While I think we should show different ranges of skin color for ALL races, we can't get in an uproar when one particular doll isn't representing EVERY SINGLE THING! Take one thing at a time!
