This is a beautiful doll. I am very happy that Mattel has made a series of historical dolls in recent years. I only wish that they had dolls like this when I was growing up. I highly recommend that you add it to your collection or give it to your favorite child as a gift. This type of doll would sure get the child interested in history to some degree.
BUT
I was a little perturbed when I saw some of the recent reviews for this toy. Someone (who shall remain nameless) wrote that this is a shameful doll because the Portuguese empire was and I quote... "...a very evil, deadly thing for millions of real, living human beings, as all empires are." You know, as opposed to all of those dead unreal human beings out there (I still don't know what this is supposed to mean).
So, based on this shallow, indoctrinated view of history, we should also be concerned about "Princess of the British court Barbie" because the British oppressed and killed so many in India and Africa in addition to keeping their own people so impoverished that women in the Victorian era had to prostitute themselves on the streets of London for pieces of bread. We should also rally against Queen Elizabeth I Barbie because the historical Elizabeth I had Syphilis and advocated and religious genocide. And Princess of the Danish court Barbie should be taken off the shelves because Hamlet is set in Denmark and everyone dies at the end of that play...that's not a good example for our kids. And teacher Barbie should be burned in the streets for perpetuating the idea girls can only be teachers.....and blah, blah, blah....
Seriously people, it's a BARBIE. I do hope that this sort of narrow mindedness does not keep Mattel from making a Spanish Princess Barbie or a Spanish Empire Barbie. Because I am tired of cultural indoctrination villanizing some cultures (like the Spanish and the Portuguese) while glorifying others (like the British) when they are all guilty of the same crimes.

Barbie's The Dolls of The World Collection as a whole is enchanting and engaging. The Princess of the Portuguese Empire, one of the more recent additions to the set, is a strikingly beautiful doll. Dressed in a gorgeously detailed period costume (bodice and gown) of sienna velvet, this Barbie represents a young woman of the royal court of Lisbon in the 1500's. Unlike many Barbies, she has long, rich, dark curly hair, and an olive complexion with arrestingly dark eyes. I have purchased this Barbie for a serious female adult collector, whose first reaction upon seeing her was to gasp in pleasure at Barbie's appearance. I can't imagine a better endorsement.

I bought this lovely doll for my mother, who is Portuguese. She was thrilled. I ended up having to buy several more for the grandkids, as she won't let them touch hers! She is one popular and beautiful doll and everyone that has recieved one has been delighted.
