5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Doll, check your undereducated PC crap at the door
This is a beautiful doll. I am very happy that Mattel has made a series of historical dolls in recent years. I only wish that they had dolls like this when I was growing up. I highly recommend that you add it to your collection or give it to your favorite child as a gift. This type of doll would sure get the child interested in history to some degree.

BUT...

I bought this to save for use as a future birthday gift, but she's so pretty I may keep it myself.

BUT

I was a little perturbed when I saw some of the recent reviews for this toy. Someone (who shall remain nameless) wrote that this is a shameful doll because the Portuguese empire was and I quote... "...a very evil, deadly thing for millions of real, living human beings, as all empires are." You know, as opposed to all of those dead unreal human beings out there (I still don't know what this is supposed to mean).

So, based on this shallow, indoctrinated view of history, we should also be concerned about "Princess of the British court Barbie" because the British oppressed and killed so many in India and Africa in addition to keeping their own people so impoverished that women in the Victorian era had to prostitute themselves on the streets of London for pieces of bread. We should also rally against Queen Elizabeth I Barbie because the historical Elizabeth I had Syphilis and advocated and religious genocide. And Princess of the Danish court Barbie should be taken off the shelves because Hamlet is set in Denmark and everyone dies at the end of that play...that's not a good example for our kids. And teacher Barbie should be burned in the streets for perpetuating the idea girls can only be teachers.....and blah, blah, blah....

Seriously people, it's a BARBIE. I do hope that this sort of narrow mindedness does not keep Mattel from making a Spanish Princess Barbie or a Spanish Empire Barbie. Because I am tired of cultural indoctrination villanizing some cultures (like the Spanish and the Portuguese) while glorifying others (like the British) when they are all guilty of the same crimes.

Barbie's The Dolls of The World Collection as a whole is enchanting and engaging. The Princess of the Portuguese Empire, one of the more recent additions to the set, is a strikingly beautiful doll.

Dressed in a gorgeously detailed period costume (bodice and gown) of sienna velvet, this Barbie represents a young woman of the royal court of Lisbon in the 1500's.

Unlike many Barbies, she has long, rich, dark curly hair, and an olive complexion with arrestingly dark eyes.

I have purchased this Barbie for a serious female adult collector, whose first reaction upon seeing her was to gasp in pleasure at Barbie's appearance. I can't imagine a better endorsement.

I bought this lovely doll for my mother, who is Portuguese. She was thrilled. I ended up having to buy several more for the grandkids, as she won't let them touch hers! She is one popular and beautiful doll and everyone that has recieved one has been delighted.

I have had this doll since right after she came out, and I love her. I still play with barbies although I am 15, and this one is one of my absolute favorites. Her dress is absolutly lovely, although once taken off it can be difficult to get the sleeves over her thumbs again. Her hair is beautiful, thick, dark and curly. An amazing doll well worth the price.

Wow! Absolutely fantastic! Let's get to the good points first! Her dress is marvelous! Especially the skirt which is made from panne velvet. (Under her skirt is a white linen like skirt). Her sleeves are also gorgeous which were beautifully knit like the torso of her dress. Her hair is a nice hue of dark brown and black lightly curled. However, like Princess of Ireland, her hair gets tangled in the packaging. Her body type is the same as Princess of the Danish Court and similar to that of Princess of Ireland's. Her eyes never seem to look straight at you, however are a dazzling shade of almond. One ringlet of her hair is tied discreetly to her dress to avoid tangling and to show off her wondrous hair which is crowned by a cap of bendable metal lace. Her dress is removable, however, the third button on her back is sewn to tighten her dress. Another bad point is her shoes. It's like Princess of Ireland's only the same color as her dress and the cheap plastic they use for common types of Barbie's shoes. Although she has her bad points, Princess of Portugal is a wonderful doll! I rate her the best among the 3rd installment of this collection!

I collect Barbies. I started at the beginning of this year and have 46 in all in my collection. I don't play with them. I keep them in the boxes. But Princess Of The Portuguese Empire was the first barbie I got to start my collecting. I am Portuguese myself and I was browsing through Wal-Mart one day and was shocked to discover that a Portuguese Barbie was made. For I always liked Barbie's and started to collect them seriously after the Portuguese one came out. She's gorgeous! Her dress is a beautiful dark brown color and is of Renaissance Fashion. She is great for all collectors out there. A great doll.

I have nearly every doll in this collection and love them all. The rich history on the back is great to read and learn about. Also the dolls are beautifully made. They hold up really good in play and come with a stand that can be used for collectors. I am 16 and play with her and my others nearly everyday. My only complaint is her shoes fall off easy and Barbie stands are not the best. Other then that, she is a good bargin.

I loved the Princess of Ireland and could not believe they would match this quality again, but they have! She is gorgeous, the hair a dark read and curls, not many Barbies had the curly hair. The face is gorgeous, the costume so richly detailed you really have to see this doll to believe the workmanship put into it.

At this price it's a steal for collection, yet reasonable enough to put under the tree or for a birthday for that very special granddaughter, daughter or niece!

I never liked Barbie's as a child but the princess collection has been a favorite of my 6 yr. old daughter. I enjoy finding new ones and the story on the back about the princess and her world is very enjoyable. We have all of them so far. I believe they are
Danish, English, Greek, Portuguese, Irish and Celtic, Cambodian, South African, Ancient mexico (the box design is different), and a navaho princess is coming out soon. I recommend these barbie's rather than trendy television based ones.
