Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6The third and most dramatic in a series of novels about Grover and Baby, a dolphin whose life he saved years before. The plot is full of tension and suspense, as the man and his friends try to rescue several dolphins from the poachers who have captured the animals to sell to aquariums. As the danger mounts, it soon becomes clear that lives, human and dolphin, are very much at stake. Grovers claim that he is able to communicate telepathically with Baby and the pod is convincing. Scenes of a dolphin drowning in a poachers net (it is rescued at the last minute), of dolphins and rescuers dodging bullets in the water as they are pursued, and of the freed dolphins turning on their captors to protect Grover and his companions will have readers on the edge of their seats. Fowlers soft-pencil drawings are interesting and effective. This informative and exciting adventure on the high seas makes great reading even for reluctant readers and will make dolphin lovers out of all children.Susan Oliver, Tampa-Hillsborough Public Library System, FL

From Booklist

In the third book of this marine adventure series that began with the nonfiction Dolphin Adventure (1990) and continued in the novel Dolphin Treasure (1996), diver Wayne Grover becomes involved in trying to save dolphins from being captured by an illegal poaching ring off the coast of Florida. Aided by friends Amos and Jack, Wayne embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue and free Baby, the beloved dolphin whose life Wayne saved years before, and the members of its family. Action and suspense combine with an informative account of dolphin life, and an environmentally aware message about the dangers of poaching. Grover includes many fascinating facts about dolphins, including their gentle nature and potential for human bonding, as well as the hazards of the flip side: how taming wild animals can have tragic repercussions. Alternating chapters contrast the dolphins' plight with Wayne's responses and action for a fast-paced read; age-appropriate and reader-friendly, the book is a boon for fans of wildlife-and action-adventures in general. 4.0 out of 5 stars Action-packed Dolphin Rescue, October 20, 2010
This review is from: Dolphin Freedom (Paperback)
Wayne Grover and his friends once again are boating around off the coast of Florida when they realize their ever present dolphin pod is missing. They have a nasty run in with dolphin poachers but after telling the local police are told they can't do anything about it. Wayne decides he must rescue Baby and his family one way or the other and they get themselves into lots of troubles as they set out to rescue the dolphins from deplorable holding pens off a Bahamian island.

This third book in the series is quite different from the first two. For one it is longer and written at a higher reading level and secondly it is not the sweet, heart touching story of the others. This one involves lots of adventure, a fight in a Bahamian Bar and the men swim for their life as they are shot at. It is a well-written adventure story for children but I must say it was my least favourite of the series. On the other hand, I must tell that it was the 8yo's favourite of the series. He was on the edge of his seat with excitement during the final shoot-out getaway. This one is definitely a "boy" book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Man befriends dolphins., September 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dolphin Freedom (Library Binding)
This is a very good book about a man who befriends some dolphins and helps to rescue them from poachers. There are more books - Dolphin Adventures & Dolphin Treasures. I recommend this book for students in grades 2 - 4.
