Book Description

December 31, 1996 9 and up
Dive into the fascinating world of dolphins and porpoises, and learn about some of the most beautiful and intriguing animals on earth. Filled with more than 100 full-color photographs, almost all taken in the wild, this informative introduction is organized in an easy-to-read question-and-answer format. Find out where dolphins live, what their bodies are like, how their senses meet the demands of life in the sea, what and how they eat, the way they reproduce and care for their young, how they protect themselves, and their relationships with people. Meet the whole family of dolphin species from the well-known Bottlenose Dolphin (made popular by the Flipper television show and film) to the extremely rare Vaquita porpoise, which only grows to an average of 4 1/2 feet long. Discover amazing facts such as that the Killer Whale is actually a dolphin, that dolphins and porpoises first swam in the seas around 12 million years ago, that they swallow their food whole, and that they use their own language to talk to each other. Learn also about how people's actions are endangering the world's dolphin population and find out what can be done to protect these intelligent and graceful creatures. 80 pages (all in color), 8 1/2 x 8 1/2. Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6. A question-and-answer format is skillfully employed to reveal the life cycle and characteristics of a variety of dolphins. The well-organized text first helps readers to define what makes a dolphin a dolphin (and not a fish, a whale, or a porpoise) and then moves on to answer a wide range of questions about the natural history of these fascinating creatures. Finally, the book introduces 15 species of dolphins, many of which are little known. The common as well as unusual questions are interwoven among numerous clear, bright, full-color photographs. Informative and understandable diagrams, along with X-ray photographs of dolphin bone structure, help to flesh out explanations. A welcome addition for young browsers and researchers alike.?Lisa Wu Stowe, Great Neck Library, NY

From Booklist

Gr. 3^-5. Well-done books on dolphins are always welcome, since the friendly, intelligent creature is a frequent and favorite topic for research and reports in elementary schools. Plenty of visuals and bite-size pieces of information make this attractive volume helpful for younger readers as well as children with reading difficulties. The authors effectively use a question-and-answer format to reveal facts about eating habits, reproduction, self-defense, and the dolphin's unique characteristics and lifestyle. Readers can also obtain considerable information from the extensive captions that accompany the full-color photos and occasional drawings and diagrams. Even libraries with plenty of dolphin books may want to consider this for its accessible format. Lauren Peterson
