Nicely written, Kid-friendly Dolphin story,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dolphin's First Day: The Story of a Bottlenose Dolphin - a Smithsonian Oceanic Collection Book (Mini book) (Hardcover)
This is a story about a newborn Bottleneck dolphin's first day in the ocean. It is nicely written and illustrated but the kid friendly story line takes away slightly from the factual information. Even so, both my children (2 year-old and 4 year-old) and I really enjoy this book and others in this "Smithsonian Ocean Series" especially Manatee Winter.

This is my 2 1/2 year-old's favorite book. She requests I read it to her almost every night at bedtime, and she is usually out by the last page. It has great illustrations, a pleasing story, and concludes with the dolphins sleeping at the end of the day. The story begins with the birth of a dolphin and the assistance of a "nanny" who is the mother's best friend. They hunt for fish and even have an encounter with a shark, but the "Little Dolphin" is whisked away to safety by his mother and nanny. My daughter's only question about the storyline is "where's the daddy", to which I tell her the daddy is hunting fish.

My 5 year old loves this book, I think that it describes things in a way that she can understand without talking down to her. I agree with a previous reviewer that it would be nice if the print on the dark blue was white instead of black. I will buy other books from this series now.

If you are trying to read it to or over the shoulder of a child 4-8, the print is too small. Also, alot of the pages are blue (underwater) and the type is black providing little contrast if you try to read this in low light (e.g. bedtime). This book is just too small.
