Book Description

9 and up4 and up
The creators of the popular The Octopus: Phantom of the Sea and Sharks: Challengers of the Deep now team up to produce a beautiful, informative book on dolphins. Readers will enjoy learning how these appealing mammals hunt for food, care for their young, and defend themselves. This book also explains the many ways in which dolphins help human beings—by saving people from drowning, aiding fishermen in finding schools of fish, and, most amazingly, assisting both children and adults in coping with cancer, depression, and physical disabilities. In addition, there's a chapter devoted to ways in which humans can help protect dolphins. Jeffrey L. Rotman traveled to the Red Sea and to Dolphin Reef in Israel to capture these striking photographs, which include gorgeous close-ups and playful scenes of dolphins socializing with children. This is the perfect book for animal lovers, dolphin lovers, and budding environmentalists.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-Cerullo explores the world of dolphins with a particular emphasis on their behavior. Much attention is also given to people who work with these mammals and studies of the interactions between humans and dolphins. In the first chapter, the author relates her own experiences at a dolphin research center in the Florida Keys, where she swam with the animals and spoke to many of the researchers about their different projects. The book continues in this anecdotal style with visits to various research centers around the world and descriptions of their scientific investigations. One section focuses on the use of these animals in therapy work with disabled or critically ill people. There are many facts about dolphins scattered throughout the text, but the chatty writing style and somewhat sophisticated language make them difficult to find without careful reading. Eye-catching full-color photos, many of dolphins and humans together, do much to add to the book's appeal. Though not the best choice for report writers, this title is a good supplemental source. It has lots of appeal for casual readers and fans of this popular animal.

EHMAGOD I just loved this book so much it made me wanna go out and learn more about DOLPHINS! The info is sooo radical it's like "wow I didn't know that before!" WOW WOW WOW I can't believe the book had to end...I mean all my friends think I'm like such a dork, you know, cause this book made me start trying to act like a dolphin, but it was SOOOO GOOD!!! Who needs friends when you can have a great book like this? What I didn't like though was how it wasn't a coloring book because I like to color. I totally agree with that Samar girl...this book deserves FIVE STARS!!! It was so like inspiring it made me wanna go out and hug someone!!! That's about it...tutalu!
