It took me a few months to get through this treasure. A background in the religious life (through actual experience) would be helpful to the reader though not entirely essential. Dom Gabriel Sortais was indeed a remarkable man for his time. While this is a biographical work, it does contain a huge source of quotes and remarks and statements etc from Dom Sortais. The wisdom in this book would be (in my opinion) very helpful to novice masters (or formation directors) today because it is indeed spot on in many spiritual aspects of religious life even if your community is not contemplative. I could think of several religious communities today who are in major decline who could benefit from the wisdom in this wonderful work. You may find yourself coming to some surprising passages that you could have used in your formation particularly if you are in a community of Post Vatican IIites living like the church only came into existence at Vatican II. Attention Novice Masters recover the wisdom of men like Dom Sortais.
