A criminal named Ahmed convinces him to leave his devoted grandmother (Ljubica Adzovic) and loving girlfriend, and to use his powers to make some money illegally. While becoming a man and learning the trade of crime, the boy searches for his sister (who was supposed to have a leg operation) and tries to save money to realize his fantasy of returning home to marry the woman of his dreams. This film won Emir Kusturica an award at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival for his direction.

After purchasing a Blu-ray player recently, I decided to finally lose all the old VHS tapes I've been hanging onto for years, so I've been going through them one by one, deciding which to upgrade to DVD, which to upgrade to Blu-ray, and which to just pitch and forget. I find that this is the only film in my collection which is simply unavailable as a region 1 DVD, and I am appalled. This is one of the most lovely and haunting films I have ever seen, a film of heartbreaking beauty. Why this has never been made available in the Region 1 market is unfathomable to me.

This is a beautiful film. You will love it, and appreciate it and recommend to your friends... but unless you are from the Balkans you will never fully be able to understand it. Nevertheless, I highly recommend it.

Unless you are familiar with eastern culture this flick will look strange. On top of this this piece of life cut out of bigger picture which is communism and to understand movie properly I recommend to spend some time in Cuba or Serbia as regular person not a tourist.
