Protection AND Ways to Help Yourself,
This review is from: Domestic Violence and Relationship Abuse Awareness and Prevention for College Women - A Reminder (Paperback)
Why should we college-aged women have to worry about assault during what may be the most stressful time already, getting our college degree? I want more control over my life and I don't have to give up to get by. As Domestic Violence and Relationship Abuse Awareness and Prevention for College Women teaches so clearly, you can learn the WARNING SIGNS so that you don't get caught unaware. And what really helped me was the training that showed me exactly how to help a roommate who was struggling through a horrid relationship of constant abuse. She would not have gotten out had I not helped and I was fortunate because I had just Domestic Violence and Relationship Abuse a day or so earlier and I knew how to deal with abusers far better than before and I knew how to help my friend who needed help. This is an honest book, one that doesn't spend a lot of time with blame but one that focuses on the woman in need. I think enough of this volume to tell you about it.

Increased freedom means increased awareness,
This review is from: Domestic Violence and Relationship Abuse Awareness and Prevention for College Women - A Reminder (Paperback)
The freedom that women experience when they go away for college is often refreshing and freeing (if not a little apprehensive also of course). Leaving one's "nest" certainly is something wonderful in many ways. The problem is that our awareness of situations around us does not insantly change with our venue. We don't always remember to take along added precaution that any new environment around total strangers requires. The most vital help that Domestic Violence and Relationship Abuse Awareness and Prevention for College Women can do for you is found in the subtitle: be a REMINDER to those of us in college who need to understand that not everybody thinks as we do. It is too easy to let our guard down. It is too easy to look at a potential "Mr. Right" and miss the signs he is "Mr. Wrong." It happens to all of us to some degree or another but as Wambui points out so clearly here, being wrong just once can change the course of our lives in detrimental ways we never imagined. Get Domestic Violence and Relationship Abuse as soon as you can. Along with your dorm meal ticket and text books, THIS book should be in your school bag and you should read it and prepare yourself now.

Recommended Read for Women of All Ages,

This review is from: Domestic Violence and Relationship Abuse Awareness and Prevention for College Women - A Reminder (Paperback)
"Domestic Violence and Relationship Abuse Awareness and Prevention For College Women - A Reminder" by Wambui Bahati is more than just another self-help guide or petition for awareness; it's a look at the frightening stastics of abuse in our world and how we can change them. The author digs down deep into her own history to share life lessons she unfortunately learned the hard way in an effort to prevent it from occuring to someone else. No one should need to read a book of this nature and yet as our society currently stands, it's more than over due. Speaking from the voice of experience, the messages are relayed in gentle tones much like those of a close girl friend, coupled with the strength and confidence gained from having survived similar events herself. She reminds you to be aware of your surroundings (both people and places) and never ignore your gut feeling (it's there for a reason). Be wary of the warning signs of a potentially abusive situation and if you do end up in this type of relationship, a few key pointers on getting out. Though intended for college age readers, it's an insightful read for women of all ages. Show it to your friends, your family, and anyone you know. Knowledge is power and the more educated we are on matters such as this, the more comfortable we will feel saying "no, I won't stand for it". For further reading...if you haven't read the author's biography/memoir 'You Don't Know Crazy', I highly recommend it as well. You Don't Know Crazy

This is a must read for college freshmen!!!,
This review is from: Domestic Violence and Relationship Abuse Awareness and Prevention for College Women - A Reminder (Paperback)
This is a great book that should be given away at either high school graduation or college orientation. This book really reminds women of things we forget when we find ourselves in a new situation. We are at a new school trying to fit in and find our niche and are so busy doing that that we forget how to keep ourselves safe. We need to be reminded to listen to our gut. If we feel that something is wrong 9 times out of 10 it is. And we should always be safe than sorry. Some women are in abusive relationships and don't even know it. Wambui Bahati Takes characters from the play I am Domestic Violence to warn women that just because he doesn't hit you, doesn't mean you are not being abused. I hope that by reading this book the scarily high statistics of women who are abused and raped in college will decline dramatically. |
