Grade 7 Up This is a comprehensive in troduction to the geography, people, history, economy, and government of the country which shares the Caribbe an island of Hispaniola with Haiti. A series of maps shows its rivers, roads, and cities, its topography, and its loca tion in relation to the United States. The illustrations are mostly photo graphs, with some in color and up to date; others are in black and white and of indeterminant age. Many photo graphs show the people working to im prove their lives and living conditions. The text, while not exciting, communi cates the story of a turbulent, chaotic history fraught with wars, dictators, foreign intervention, and poverty. A useful survey in its portrayal of histori cal realities as well as such modern ones as infant mortality and life expec tancy rates. Frances E.
