Book Description

March 1999
The saga of the Unified Worlds, which began with Ganwold's Chic and continued with Echoes of Issel, is the story of one military family at the center of politics and war on a cluster of colonized worlds far away in space and time. The patriarch of the family, Admiral Lujan Serege, is Commander in Chief of the Unified Worlds' special forces, known as the Spherzah. His former enemy, the breakaway world of Issel, needs the assistance of the Spherzah to resist attacks by the alien masuk slavers. During negotiations for this aid, Lujan is critically injured by a terrorist bomb. The damage to his nervous system renders him almost entirely without sensation or control of his body. Nearly cut off from the outside world, he is removed from command by members of his own government scheming against him. While he struggles to regain control of his body, he must also rely on his own family - his son, Tristan, and his wife, Captain Darcie Dartmuth - to help him root out a conspiracy orchestrated by the chief minister of Issel, who aspires to restore the old Dominion and bring the Unified Worlds under its control. Only Lujan is fully aware of the extent of the corruption, and he faces the most difficult battle of his life as he must fight his physical incapacitation to gather the evidence he needs to prevent the Issellan's plan from succeeding.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

This is the third book in Diann Thornely's Unified Worlds saga (Ganwold's Child, Echoes of Issel), a serviceable military science fiction series from one of the genre's newer writers. It opens with series protagonist Admiral Lujan Serege in a hospital bed, almost fully paralyzed and comatose after taking the brunt of a terrorist bomb. At his side are his wife Darcie Dartmuth and their son, Tristan. Cut off from command and virtually isolated from the world, Lujan must work not only to heal his terribly wounded body and mind, but also to stop the plotting of his nemesis, Seulemont Remarq. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal

Lujan Serege, admiral in the military defending the Unified Worlds against Issel Sector threats, recovers from a bombing by terrorists attempting to co-opt the government. Thornley (Echoes of Issel, Tor, 1996) creates an intriguing continuation of her Unified Worlds military and political saga. Recommended for sf collections.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strong ending to the trilogy, August 4, 2003
This review is from: Dominion's Reach (Paperback)
One of Thornley's strengths as a writer is her ability to mix technology with humanity. In this, the third book in a trilogy that began with "Ganwold's Child," she nicely intertwines two plot elements, Lujan Serege's recovery from an assassination attempt against the devious political maneuverings of the Dominion.

Within this structure, she is able to balance the two story lines pretty much equally--though following Lujan's arduous path through rehabilitation was (at least for me) the more compelling drama.

I for one certainly hope that Diann Thornley has more works forthcoming--in a world of science fiction that seems conspicuously devoid of humanity, her novels are entertaining and touching, without being sentimental or juvenile.
