for beginners...,
This review is from: The Dominologist: Learn To Become The Best At Dominoes (Paperback)
it gives basic strats already known in serious domino circles, so its good for new players not for seasoned vets looking for that edge. written quite well though, it seems the author really put his personality in it, it was like i was actually talking to the author as i read the book, i read it every chance i got. the title should be: dominoe basics for beginners.

Snappy banter but little strategy,
This review is from: The Dominologist: Learn To Become The Best At Dominoes (Paperback)
This book will do little more than take a beginning player to a novice. It spends quite a bit of space just listing the posible scoring combinations when playing. There are a few references to strategies to employ but no examples to illustrate their practical application. I am sure the author is an excellent player but he is a poor writer who fails to explan his thought processes and depth of understanding of this game.

This book is written in a breezy style which may be fun for some people, but has little detail or examples or even high level strategy. The style results in things like count the board. Great what do I with this count? Or the books says be careful. What does be careful mean? Also the book is disorganized. It talks about combinations in one chapter, but does not explain what a combination is until two chapters later. I would say skip this, but I don't know of any other domino books. I wanted to catch up with my friends who have been playing for years, but this book will not do it.

THIS BOOK ROCKS !!
Before I read this book I never had the nerve to sit in on a game of dominoes. After I started reading, I couldn't put the book down. The book encouraged me to purchase my first set of dominoes and I started to play. I earmarked references on almost every page. I was expecting a technical how to book but was pleasantly surprised that it read like a novel and had me laughing out loud. I especially liked the glossary and memorized a few of the common slang terms. The people, who used to intimidate me, now include me in their games. They are surprised I know how to slam the bones. I just had to write to say this book ROCKS. |
