5.0 out of 5 stars Like reading Coach's Corner
What I loved best about this book is that Don Cherry's "voice" shines through on every page. 3.0 out of 5 stars Three-and-a-half stars out of four on normal rating scale...Pls. Read on...
The latest from Don Cherry with my fellow
Sirius Radio Toronto broadcaster, Hockey's
Al Strachan. Don details some of his lengthy
Hockey career as a player, then Coach and for
many years now, Antgonist/Anaylst. Great new
pics are included as well. The tree-humpers
and others leftist may cringe at the thought
of him, but I love...

5.0 out of 5 stars Like reading Coach's Corner, January 5, 2009

What I loved best about this book is that Don Cherry's "voice" shines through on every page. Reading the book felt just like listening to Don on Coach's Corner - outspoken, opinionated, and passionate. Cherry writes what it was like playing in the minors, shares stories of players past and current, as well as personal anecdotes of Hockey Night in Canada and the most famous hockey dog, his Blue. He isn't afraid to call out individuals by name for their behavior and admits some of his own mistakes as well. Love him or hate him, there's two things that can't be argued after reading this book - 1) Don is a proud Canadian who understands and appreciates his heritage and 2) Don Cherry loves the game of hockey. His love of the game comes through on every page.

Love him or hate him, Don Cherry has been one of the most notable people in the NHL who isn't afraid to say it like it is. I remember him when he coached the Bruins and now on Hockey Night in Canada, he's just as opinionated. I don't mind someone who gives his/her opinion as long as they have the experience to back it up. Don Cherry is that man. He not only has the brains, but better yet, he is one of the strongest hearted people in the NHL today. Great book by a great man.

Not much to say about this one, it's basically Don Cherry telling hockey stories. His personality comes through very well, he's frank and honest as always, and it's entertaining. A quick and lighthearted read, probably more of a rental or used purchase though.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really fun, easy to read book, February 5, 2011
I'm not a big book reader. In fact, school has turned me off from reading so much. However, I bought this book while on vacation in Canada since it was Grapes. Don Cherry would not put out a bad book, would he? Of course not... it's more like sitting for a couple hour long interview with hockey's most recognizable commentator and coach. Granted, I didn't know all of the exact moments he was describing first hand. I wasn't aware of the world when the Colorado Rockies were a hockey team and not a baseball team, but the way Grapes described everything, I was able to envision what happened. It was like talking to "Dad" talking about his hockey heroes growing up, and not just the obvious players either! Any hockey fan should do themselves the favor of buying and reading this book, regardless of remembering the players mentioned or not!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really entertaining!, March 4, 2010

I wasn't a Don Cherry fan until I read this book. It was written as if he was sitting across the table telling me stories about moments in his life. I liked the way that it bounces around, instead of starting at the beginning and heading towards the end. It's a great book for anyone interested in the last 35 years of hockey.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Super Stories, May 1, 2009
By
This review is from: Don Cherry's Hockey Stories and Stuff (Hardcover)
Most of my readers will have no clue who Don Cherry is. But if you are from Canada, he is a national hero or figure. Depends on how you see him. This is a autobiography that is more concerned with good hockey stories than telling the life story of Don. Don is a flamboyant man that is on T.V. every Saturday night. He does The Coach's Corner. On Saturday night, the majority of people in Canada watches Hockey Night in Canada. It is a national past time. This is an enjoyable read about hockey living. It is about some of the most well known players ever, like Bobby Orr. It is a light read and entertaining. If you like hockey, this is a great book. I had to read it as a break from all of the church development books I been reading lately.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining; Just Like 'Grapes' Talking To You From the TV, February 4, 2009

This review is from: Don Cherry's Hockey Stories and Stuff (Hardcover)
If you've seen Don Cherry on his "Coach's Corner" show on TV's "Hockey Night In Canada," then you are well-prepared to read this book. "Grapes" goes from one topic to the next, rapid-fire, sometimes not completely finishing his thought. He just says what hits him at the moment. His grammar isn't the best either and he's extremely frank, sometimes outrageous. All of this is just the way we like it!!

Right in the beginning of this book, he explains to the reader that he's going to keep the same approach. When you read this book, it's like Cherry talking to you right from the TV screen 10 feet away. In case kids want to read the book, he says, he won't use profanity - so you can give this to your children. I appreciated that.

As someone old enough to know most of the names Cherry mentions in this book, I thoroughly enjoying hearing about these guys.....and about him. It's just wonderful stuff. Don't look for a cohesive story; that's not Don, but it's as entertaining as listening to him.

The only disappointment is that he never said how he got the nickname "Grapes." If someone knows, please write me!

Got this book for my husband for Christmas. We're a life-long hockey family and big fans of "Grapes." My husband laughs out loud at something on every page of this book - very entertaining stories!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Read, January 7, 2009
This review is from: Don Cherry's Hockey Stories and Stuff (Hardcover)
I really enjoyed reading this book. The book is a compilation of short hockey stories throughout Cherry's life. It's narration style is great. It's easy to imagine that you are sitting back having a few beers as Cherry tells his story.
