Book Description

October 2003 1894765370 978-1894765374
Don Forest: Quest for the Summits tells the story of one of the most colorful-perhaps eccentric-people of the Canadian West, who is also an award-winning mountaineer. Yet Don Forest didn't take up the sport until he was in his mid-40s.At a time when most men are thinking of retiring from strenuous activities, Don was busy setting records: He was the first person to climb all 27 of the 11,000-foot peaks in the Canadian Rockies and Columbia Mountains in one year, and in 1991, at age 71, he was the oldest person to climb Mount Logan, Canada's highest mountain. In 1992, he celebrated his 72nd birthday with friends, cake, and champagne on the summit of Holy Cross Mountain-a 9000-foot-high mountain in southwest Alberta.Kathy Calvert's biography of Don Forest runs the gamut of emotion: Her narrative swings from the humor in Don's eccentricities and the pathos of Don's dealing with close friends lost in the mountains to the pride and satisfaction felt when Don's climbing career was recognized by his peers across Canada.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun reading if you love the outdoors!, July 14, 2007

This review is from: Don Forest: Quest for the Summits (Paperback)
If you are an outdoors person, particularly in the North American west, this is a great read. Sure, it's not long on psychological insight or personal conflict, but as the story of a remarkable outdoorsman it's a sure motivator, and is especially fun to read as you tour the Canadian Rockies. I suspect many of us learned to love the outdoors on outings with our fathers, and while most fathers can't compare with Mr. Forest, his and his family's experiences will bring back your own fond memories. This book isn't just about Mr. Forest's prodigious climbing career, it's about how he shared his love of the mountains with others.

Another reason I liked it is because the book is definitely home-spun. These aren't stories about maladjusted peak-baggers or misanthropic daredevils of the mountains, they're stories about the kind of people you or I might share a rope with. And the kind of people who aren't just good in the outdoors, but are also down to earth enough to be likable. In short, it's not death and desperation a la Everest, it's good times in the wilds with your pals. I admit prejudice because I'm familiar with some of these folks, but I'm sure anyone would identify with the characters here.

Lots of good pictures too.
