This is an example of what an insightful conductor can bring to a famous work. I used to be a die-hard fan of the Giulini recording from the sixties until I came across this recording in my capacity as a shameless Thomas Hampson fan.
Hampson and the ladies are indeed wonderful,but the star of this recording is Harnoncourt who brings out so many subtle detailes that I went and bought the complete recording!
