2.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Production, Regretable Product April 20, 2011
By Chris
I love this Don Quixote. It gave Don Quixote more weight to make the story cohesive. I was totally moved by Don Quixote's determination and kindness when the ballet ended in Don Quixote and Sancho Panza's marching at the center of the stage. The principal dancers were great, the production was beautiful and luxurious. The energy and youthfulness were immediately palpable. There will be more Don Quixote blu-ray release in the future, I think this one will stand as unique as it is today.

Then why only two stars? It is because of the camera work. When the camera moved, the motion blur was just awful. Out of 23 ballet blu-ray discs I have, only two suffer motion blur this bad (the other is Balanchine's Jewels by Paris Opera Ballet, Opus Arte 2008 release). I watched it on a 120Hz LCD TV. LCD TVs can have different degree of motion blurs, but I am sure this is not the case. I used a computer software to look through the video file frame by frame. I found that the blur occurs within the frames, that means you will see it on plasma TV as well. Those who are sensitive to motion blurs should be prepared for headaches if you decide to watch it :-).

(I got my disc from UK, it is region free)

2.0 out of 5 stars don Quichot blu-ray April 30, 2011
Verified Purchase
This is a nice production with lots of good, sometimes excellent, dancing. The experience is ruined by blurry, fuzzy video. I have all ballet blu-rays issued thus far and am familiar with the problems of recording ballet. I have never seen such poor video on a blu-ray. Arthaus should include some aspirin with each copy. You'll need it half way through the ballet.Don Quichot [Blu-ray]

4.0 out of 5 stars Motion Sickness April 24, 2011
What Chris (a reviewer here) has referred to as 'motion blur' is actually called a Judder. This is what keeps happening on this otherwise absolutely wonderful production of Don Quixote. I have a 200Hz LCD equipped with a Judder correction thingy, but even after doing so, the smoothing is not as good as I would like it to be. Ballatomane (another reviewer in the UK edition) has declared that there is no such problem at all in that set up. I would like to know what settings have been employed there.
I possess a region free copy of this purchased in the UK.

This is a long awaited fresh release of this great ballet in blu ray. I have with me 4 other DVDs of this production by the Paris Opera (Dupont/Legris), Kirov (Novikova/Sarafanov), ABT (Barishnykov/Harvey) and the celebrated release of the so called 'Nureyev' version that preceded the ABT.

Of these, the Kirov production was killed by the conductor in a totally disoriented interpretation of the music, although the dancers were simply divine (Their Fandango was absolutely the best with Elena Bazhenova looking fantastic).
The ABT and the production before it suffer badly from Truncated music, although the dancing in both the versions is simply superb. The ABT and Nureyev productions abridged the whole ballet, leaving out plenty of great music with great dances.

So that leaves Paris OH production of 2002. This was (and in many ways is), the best of the lot even compensating for the lack of HD at the time. The video was wonderfully shot.

But this one is special.
I have never seen Anna Tsygankova dance before, and I not only pleasantly surprised, but totally impressed.

5.0 out of 5 stars On the eighth day, God made Ratmansky... September 29, 2011
By Sarynka
I'm going to start off by saying that Ratmansky is a fantastic breath of fresh air into the ballet world. In this day and age, if you have seen one Don Quixote, you have seen them all. Until Ratmansky's production. The costumes are beautiful and bright, invoking a true picture of Spain. The sets are innovative and the most creative I have seen in quite some time. The choreography remains faithful to Petipa and Gorsky, while small additions by Ratmansky transition seamlessly. I had become tired of seeing so many Don Q's that all looked the same. This one is different in all the best ways. The dancers are all lovely, and I found myself absolutely charmed by Maia Makhateli's cupid. If it's your first Don Q, you'll never want to watch any other. If this is your four hundredth Don Q, you'll be amazed and in love with Ratmansky's keen eye for reinventing the classics without ruining them. What a wonderful production!
