This is THE Don Quixote English Translation to Actually Enjoy the Novel, December 19, 2008
This review is from: Don Quixote (Paperback)
Simply put, this translation is the most readable by modern standards. Nothing got in the way of my reading of it twice and sharing it with friends. The great Mad Magazine style illustrations really helped drive the point home in many of the crazy adventures you'll come across.
Look, there's nothing like reading Lathrop's original in Spanish, but if you MUST read it in English, this is the only edition that isn't a huge waste of time. All of the expressions come across perfectly. The prose flows really well for one of these translations, so you can just sit back and enjoy the hilarity and Russian doll aspect of this novel that only the Thousand and One Nights can rival (the equivalent of 1000 channels of satellite dish entertainment in a single book). On top of being more readable than the Grossman translation, Lathrop didn't get lazy and drop those helpful footnotes and explanations from his Spanish Don Quixote edition for college students. Grossman's edition leaves you wondering the context behind something, which really undermines the whole point of her having published her translation with a popular, commercial publisher...accessible to all? Not unless you've got some Spanish family or studied long and hard for a few years. Forget it, if you want to enjoy Don Quixote in all its original splendour, without wasting time, this translation, appropriately released after the fourth centenary of its publication in 1605 will fit the bill.

It's not the right edition without Jack Davis cover, March 13, 2011
This review is from: Don Quixote (Paperback)
One reviewer said that the cover was wrong. If you do not have the Jack Davis cover, you do not have the right translation. Amazon has mixed the Borders translation with mine; theirs is an old public domain translation really not suitable for the modern audience. Being the translator, I gave my version five stars!

Wonderful translation, great pictures, February 11, 2008
This review is from: Don Quixote (Paperback)
This important work is given new life by Dr. Lathrop's thoughtful translation. His introduction provides a fascinating theory about inconsistencies within Cervantes' text. Jack Davis' numerous illustrations are magnificent.
