Great Books!,
By Amanda M. Collier (Salt Lake City, UT United States) - See all my reviews

Best books on the planet if you are going camping! I spent 2 1/2 months on the road through 48 states and I would have never been able to do it without them (this one and his western edition). A must have for the low-budget traveler who wants a surefire way to find a campsite when you need one. Excellent directions and although some of the descriptions are a bit misleading, it is very easy to see where they came from. Warning: Some of the campsites are no longer usable! We found a couple that have been flooded or overrun with cows (yes, cows).

The maps and information are easy to follow. The only shortfall here are the tiny numbers. The print could have been larger and easier for the co-pilot to read while attempting to make a frugal camping choice for the night.
For the visually challenged it could be a problem.

Handy and Helpful,

A handy guide to those free or very low cost camping and RV sites offering somewhat more pleasant amenities than 'boondocking' in a Walmart parking lot. Used together with a local road map, the guide's maps, descriptions and indexes are clear and helpful for quick on-the-go decision making, and it's FAR less cluttered with ads and other nonsense than the more comprehensive Woodall's guides (though those are also useful).
Anyone could easily plan a lovely RV road trip or vacation using this guide alone, and it's well worth the money. My only real suggestion for improvement to this guide might be to include phone numbers in more of the listings, wherever possible, so that one could more easily call ahead to check for availability. Otherwise, it's damned near perfect as far as I'm concerned.

This is a great series, but it screwed up my vacation big time when I grabbed the "Western Edition" for a trip to Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri, only to find that these are actually in this, the Eastern Edition, as are Arkansas and Louisiana.
Ideally, I would give this book five stars for the info it contains (heck - ten! It's as good as everyone says it is) but zero stars for the copy editor, publisher, and whoever else that allowed such a basic, major error through. |
