The primary objective of this exhibition catalogue was to assemble high-quality works demonstrating a modernist representation of the woman. In the course of a subjective section making no claim to be exhaustive, certain major themes emerged relating to women as the object or subject of the gaze, which made it possible to group works together and establish a circuit, and called for reflection. Thus many different questions have been raised in which economic, social and political history, aesthetics and artistic creation are intertwined, all carried out in one state of mind: that of modernity defined as the hope of the present, a constantly self-critical march forward in order to build a better world.
