Book Description

1855753081 978-1855753082 December 2005
"Bowlby and Winnicott's students give us new perspectives in a lively, authentic and scholarly picture of these important figures, whose influence and major contributions to many fields is immense. I welcome this informative, entertaining and thought-provoking book and I hope that it will be widely read." --Dr. Mario Marrone

John Bowlby and Donald Winnicott were two of the most notable twentieth century pioneers in the application of psychoanalysis to child development and family studies. A series of essays, written by former students of both men, provides insight into the way they approached their work, in addition to novel and clarifying commentaries on their ideas.
The book covers such subjects as the problems of antisocial children, separation, loss, and grief. It pays attention to the social context and dimension of Bowlby and Winnicott's work and includes a novel examination of their contributions to the 1945 Curtis Committee’s deliberations leading to the landmark 1948 Children’s Act in Great Britain. Their different personalities and scientific attitudes are brought out in a lively and anecdotal way. The book ends with an extensive bibliography that links their own individual work not only to each other, but also to the many and varied strands of research and reflection that owe their origin to D.W. Winnicott and John Bowlby.

About the Author

Bruce Hauptmann is a child, adolescent and family psychiatrist in private practice in Cambridge, MA. In 1974, shortly after his return from England where he studied with Winnicott and Bowlby at the Tavistock Clinic, he wrote the proposals for grants that established the Community Therapeutic Day School. The school serves young children with serious psychiatric and neurological disorders and disabilities. He also maintains an active interest in cross-cultural child rearing, and has spent time studying Inuit children in Eastern Arctic communities.

Judith Issroff is South African-born, British and Israeli, a quintessential product of the Tavistock Clinic, School of Family Psychiatry and Community Mental Health and the Independent British Psychoanalytic tradition. She is a specialist Child, Adolescent and Family Psychiatrist, who was John Bowlby’s registrar in the Department of Children and Parents. She is qualified also in the analysis of children, adolescents, as a group analyst, and in conflict management. Her experience with survivors of trauma and in cross-cultural and social psychiatry is extensive. Following her mentors, Winnicott and Derek Miller, she has supervised and lectured in a variety of situations and published on many topics.

Christopher Reeves is a retired Child Psychotherapist. After studying psychology and philosophy at Oxford, he trained in the Department of Children and Parents at the Tavistock Clinic during John Bowlby’s tenure as Chair, while also completing a PhD in philosophy at UCL. For two years he attended clinical seminars run by Donald Winnicott. In addition to local authority child guidance work, he was for many years associated with the Mulberry Bush School. He was Chairman of the Medical Section of the British Psychological Society and Editor of the Journal of Child Psychotherapy. He has written widely on child psychotherapy, therapeutic education, philosophy and the history of ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bright new perspectives on Winnicott and Bowlby, November 7, 2005
By
This review is from: Donald Winnicott and John Bowlby: Personal and Professional Perspectives (Paperback)
I so much enjoyed reading this book! These are personal memories of Winnicott and Bowlby, two of the most important British contributors to psychoanalysis and psychotherapy in the 20th century. More than half is written by Judith Issroff, a contemporary who worked closely together with them for many years. Further chapters are added by two more experts. It is written in a lively style, completely brings to life Winnicott and Bowlby, comparing them, contrasting them, doing full justice to both, and supplying many hitherto unknown details of their lives, usually in the form of anecdotes, some funny, some deep and full of wisdom. The book would be useful and enjoyable to read for psychotherapy students as well as practitioners, and is a must for any researchers or future biographers. It contains a vast bibliography of the mushrooming recent literature about Winnicott and Bowlby.
