Shakira conquered Spanish-speaking audiences with the intriguing "Pies Descalzos", but it is this album that remains the most pivotal moment of her career. "Dónde Están los Ladrones?" was Shakira's breakthrough, the album that established her internationally as a unique force in the music industry.
All the compositions here are careful work, the work of a craftsman. For the first time, Shakira sounds like a pro, her lyrics rich with dreamy imagery and poetic inspiration, as well as a surprisingly acute internal rythym. There is sudden, new-found maturity in all of these tracks revealing for the first time a depth and complexity that Shakira lacked in her first moves.
There isn't much variety here. Fun loving tracks and soulful power ballads take up most of this album, which is a good thing because Shakira obviously carries them out astonishingly well, but it is also mildly unsettling because there seem to be a million subjects her developed voice could also be tackling. It's all good but some of it is decidedly unremarkable.
Obviously, her favorite topic is love, the fuel behind many of these songs, like the moving "Tu". "Inevitable" the only song on this album which she hasn't written or co-written is particularly strong and catchy, as well. "Si Te Vas" boasts a performance worthy of the highest respect. In the hands of a lesser singer, a lot of the material here might have drowned in sap, but Shakira sings like a woman, not a teen queen.
Shakira's difference from her pop peers is evident more than ever in her breathtaking, Arabic tribute, the megahit "Ojos Asi". Shakira's version of desire and love is nothing like the usual bees and butterflies. Abandoning all that pretense, she goes for the raw emotion. She is a passionate, seductive and driven huntress. And if we listeners are her prey, she's a mighty good one as well.

I got this album after I bought Oral Fixation Vol.2 and this is a BEAUTIFUl album with majestic and wonderfully written songs that make you want to dance along. Her songs are beautifully written and touch you deep in the heart. Buy this album if you're considering it!!!

There are some albums you listen to that truly speak to your heart and permeate your soul. "Donde Estan Los Ladrones" is one of those albums. This was Shakira's second major rock album release in this country (she had released two earlier albums in her country, Colombia, as a young singer at the ages of thirteen and sixteen).

The sound on the album is a combination of smooth, melodious guitar riffs, powerful, ironic lyrics and definitely a distinctive latin flavor. The first song, "Ciega, Sordomuda" (Blind and Mute), has what sounds like mariachi horns at the beginning, along with a dance beat. This is an energizing beginning to a stirring album. What I love about Shakira's distinctive sound, is her ability to mix power ballads ("Si Te Vas," "Ne Creo," "Que Vuelvas") with softer, more demure, slower songs ("Moscas En La Casa," "Inevitable"--which starts out slow and builds speed, "Sombra De Ti"). Of course, one of the most well known songs is "Ojos Asi." This tune was a huge hit back in her native country of Colombia, and here in the States. It combines a wonderful Lebanese-flavored musical arrangement (Shakira is half Lebanese), great percussion and a combination of Spanish and Arabic lyrics. You will be mesmerized.....This album is amazing!!!! You need to listen to it.

Shakira's second studio album is much better than many even can think. It has great Spanish lyrics. It's great to hear music in other languages - than just English. Shakira had a beautiful and great voice even during this album - and you can hear her great songs like "Ojos Asi", "Ciega, Sordomuda", "Si Te Vas", "no Creo", "Inevitable", and "Tú" from this album. Those all are classic songs. The only song in this album that doesn't make me happy is "Sombra de Ti" which is so boring. Still, I'm very glad that I bought this album - still, after years this is great to listen to.
Stars: Ojos Asi, Ciega, Sordomuda, Inevitable

This may be Shakira's best work. Her previous CD, Pies Descalzo, is nearly the same caliber of work. I am especially fond of Tu and Inevitable are mournful, almost desperate. Shakira's work in English is never as poignant as her Spanish work.

This is my favorite Shakira album. She totally rocks. Each song is different and I love that. I recommend this album.

Delivery, as always, was fast. Well packed. Cd brings the written lyrics of all the songs.
Personally, these are the songs I grew up to and remember me of my childhood. But besides the nostalgia they evoke and that influence in the liking, they are just wonderful; there are lots of songs and artists I grew up listening to that i don't necessarily like nowadays. This album "¿Dónde estan los ladrones?" and "Pies descalzos" are the best of Shakira to this day, the rest always have 2 or 3 awesome songs but none can compare, in my opinion, to these two. This is Shakira at her best, when she was still so truthful about her work and less of a media product (my opinion, don't stab me, please). Any way, I don't really buy CD's anymore, mostly download music, but this is a collectible.

La entrega, como siempre, fue rápida. Estaba bien empacado. El CD trae la letra de todas las canciones.
Personalmente, estas son las canciones con las que crecí y me acuerdan a mi niñez. Pero aparte de la nostalgia que evocan e influye en mi gusto por ellas, son maravillosas; hay muchas canciones y artistas que crecí escuchando que ahora no necesariamente me gustan. Este album "¿Dónde estan los ladrones?" y "Pies descalzos" son los mejores de Shakira hasta el día de hoy, el resto siempre tiene 2 o 3 canciones geniales pero ninguno se puede comparar, en mi opinion, a estos dos. Esto es Shakira en su mejor expresión, cuando todavía era tan sincera en su trabajo y menos un producto del medio (esta es mi opinion, no me maten, por favor). Pues si, realmente ya no compro CD's, mayormente descargo música, pero este es un coleccionable.

I love this CD! I just started listening to Shakira since I'm learning español and wanted to listen to good music. Shakira has so much talent but I'm afraid I'm going to start speaking in lyrics!

This is the cd that allowed Shakira position on the radio stations in Spanish-speaking. This CD contains great songs to listen over and over again.

what can I say---shakira is an amazing artist! I love her work. This purchase was to replace the cd that someone borrowed & has yet to return! This the cd that intorudced her to the larger latino music world. Her 'first' financial success....
