Book Description

Hesperian's classic manual, Donde no hay doctor (Where There Is No Doctor in Spanish), is perhaps the most widely used health care manual for health workers, clinicians, and others involved in primary health care delivery and health promotion programs around the world. With millions of copies in print in more than 70 languages, the book is an irreplaceable health resource in communities worldwide.

As with all Hesperian books, the manual provides practical, easily understood information on how to diagnose, treat, and prevent common diseases. Special attention is focused on nutrition, infection and disease prevention, as well as the use of diagnostic techniques as primary ways to prevent and treat health problems.

The 2007 version of Donde no hay doctor includes updated information on preventing the transmission of blood-borne diseases, how HIV/AIDS is reflected in many health issues, and basic Antiretroviral treatment information, as well as updated information on children and aspirin, stomach ulcers, hepatitis, and malaria treatments.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Where There Is No Doctor is an indispensable resource... This book has been, quite literally, a lifesaver for the poor - even where there is a doctor. --- Paul Farmer, Professor of Social Medicine, Harvard Business School

I consider Where There Is No Doctor my health bible. I carry it with me on every trip I take, and refer to it often. The information provided in this book is simple, straight forward, and easy to read. I would highly recommend that any person planning to serve overseas have a personal copy for reference. --- Anita Good, Mennonite Central Committee, Honduras

I dragged Where There is No Doctor along with me on various sojourns to Central America. I consulted it when we had private run-ins with malaria and other tropical diseases, and it was a comfort to know that its straightforward explanations and simple drawings might be of great consequence to us, and others around us when we were far from medical help. Perhaps most importantly...[the book] demystified and politicized health care. Although some health problems require expert medical attention, there is much that we can do on our own to positively affect our health... --- Cynthia Peters, Zmagazine Book Reviews

5.0 out of 5 stars I won't leave home without it!, December 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Donde no hay doctor (Paperback)
We just returned from a Hurricane Mitch Medical Relief Team in Honduras. This book was invaluable to the entire team. Comprehensive enough to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of ailments not often encountered in the US, and basic enough to share the info with the patients to aid with education. A must for anyone practicing medicine in Spanish speaking developing countries. We live near the Mexico border and I've ordered one to help me out here!

This is a fantastic reference for people interested in working as a medical interpreter. The information presented is practical, well-organized, and addresses the impact of culture on health care. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a valuable self-training manual.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantástico, December 15, 2000
This review is from: Donde no hay doctor (Paperback)
