This review is from: Dondi White Style Master General: The Life of Graffiti Artist Dondi White (Hardcover)
This book is an incredible get down into the heart of the graffiti art scene. Insider or not, the fabulous photos of Dondi's art will make you want to pick up some cans and head out to the yards. It is also a touching history of two very close friends and the dedication that art inspires. I am proud to have shown them both at my gallery.Patti Astor...

This review is from: Dondi White Style Master General: The Life of Graffiti Artist Dondi White (Hardcover)
"Dondi White Style Master General" is the ultimate collection of artwork by the legendary Dondi. And who better to author/archive this than fellow bomber and friend, Zephyr? Everything from Dondi's sketchbooks and subway pieces to gallery murals is collected here. It belongs right up there with Subway Art, the first book to document the aerosol art of Dondi. Read "Dondi White Style Master General", learn the history of a true graffiti pioneer.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN BROOKLYN...,

This review is from: Dondi White Style Master General: The Life of Graffiti Artist Dondi White (Hardcover)
In a nutshell, "Dondi White Style Master General", is an excellent retrospective on the life of the great Dondi White. Bar-none, one of the illest artist to wield a can of spray paint; Dondi's work was highly influential and propelled him to great heights. From his stomping grounds in East NY, Brooklyn to the Boogie-Down Bronx, Dondi's subway pieces were some of NY's most exciting and arguably the best. One of a handful of early graffiti artists to successfully make the transition from subway to gallery, Dondi's unique pieces were well received at home and abroad. Longtime friend Zephyr and (Dondi's) brother Mike White do a fantastic job of covering Dondi's incredible body of work. The reader is given great insight into the life n' times of an extremely humble and incredibly gifted man. Dondi's untimely and mysterious demise left the graff community and artworld deeply saddened, but his work and spirit will forever live on. --James "Koe" Rodriguez

This book to date is by far the most authentic book on Graffiti - It is a pleasure to see Dondi's work. It is very sad that we lost such a great talent. I highly recomend this book to anyone who is interested in seeing the work of a true art pioneer.

Finally, a writer writes!,

The graffiti movement has far too long relied on professional journalists to document its history. It's always the same story with elaborate social theories and catchphrases that those who were there (subway writers)find laughable. Zephyr's book is a tribute to a dear friend, a great artist and is one of the best books to date on graffiti. No art school phonies or gallery fakes in this one. A book by a real graffiti artist about a real graffiti artist.

What can I say an excellent book from an excellent artist, I am sure Dondi and others form the late 70's to early 80's movement in NYC never would have thought that their creations and inovations would become such a world wide hit and change cities across the world. From my early days as a youngster starting out in Graff in 1985 to now as a somewhat maturer but always youthful graff lover I can definately say that this book was like turning back the clock, and boy was I shocked to hear that he was never caught, "I just wish I could say that"!. A well documented and presented book but sad he is'nt here still to have written it himself "RIP DONDI"

This review is from: Dondi White Style Master General: The Life of Graffiti Artist Dondi White (Hardcover)
This is a beautiful book about the life and art of graffiti artist Dondi White. Dondi was a Brooklyn writer, king in his East New York neighborhood who became king of the whole city. From subway paintings in New York to museums and galleries worldwide, Dondi was an extraordinary artist and style master who helped establish graffiti as a legitimate, contemporary art form. Many finished train paintings are shown, along with original working sketches from Dondi's blackbooks. Also included are many of his later paintings on canvas, as well as drawings and collages which highlight his unique draftsmanship and talent.
The book contains interviews, photographs and fascinating details of the history of graffiti in New York. It is printed on top quality paper . This book is absolutely a collector's item and a must have for any student of graffiti art. |
