Book Description

1563420112 978-1563420115 March 1999 First Edition
Richard Steinheimer has been called the Ansel Adams of railroad photography, a tribute that accurately reflects the genius of his work. Dramatic night scenes, haunting images of snowscapes and steam, and evocative portraits of men and machines are hallmarks of Steinheimer's extraordinary illustrations. His quest for adventure has led him to visually explore the Denver & Rio Grande Western, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, Western Pacific, Union Pacific, Milwaukee Road, even mainline electric operation on the Pennsy.

Ted Benson is ideally suited to write the text for this new book. An award-winning photographer himself and long-time fan and friend of Steinheimer, Benson knows first-hand the hardships endured in the search for that perfect shot. He knows how to convey the satisfaction and the spirit of the chase. Benson and Steinheimer teamed up for a popular series of articles in Vintage Rails Magazine which served as the basis for this new publication.

More than 130 of Steinheimer's black and white photographs have been carefully selected and printed as high quality duotones to bring you a 50-year record of the changing face of American railroading. This important collection should be in every rail enthusiast's library!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fitting overview of the work of a master in his field, July 12, 1999
This review is from: Done Honest & True: Richard Steinheimer's Half Century of Rail Photography (Paperback)
Richard Steinheimer once told me, "We're not jusgt making photos; we're creating a body of work." With its beautifully reproduced and elegeantly laid out black and white images, this book opens a window into that body of work--and what a body of work it is. While the images themselves are technically flawless, they each also contain an obvious feeling for the subject matter, whether it be railroad rolling stock or the people who make the railroads move. While the book should appeal to virtually anyone with an interest in railroads, it will appeal particularly to those who have tried to focus their own cameras on railroad subjects. Benson's text underscores what is evident in many of the photos--the fact that Steinheimer was willing to drive or hike further, brave more sub-freezing cold, or to just wait patiently longer than others would have to capture just the right image. Steinheimer justifiably became known as the dean of western railroad photographers because he also cared more about his subject matter than most others. If you only purchase one railroad book this year, this is the one to get.

This review is from: Done Honest & True: Richard Steinheimer's Half Century of Rail Photography (Paperback)
This book is wonderful. The Photography is without parallel and Ted Benson is an excellent writer. My only criticism is that it wasn't released in hardback.
