Jimmy "Duck" Holmes

Broke & Hungry Records, 2007

In the unlikely event that I should ever forget why I love Mississippi country blues so much, all it would take to remind me is the sweet sound of a lonesome blues guitar, and no one plays one better than Jimmy "Duck" Holmes. His album Done Got Tired of Tryin' is a rare treat from the opening number, a splendid cover of the Skip James' favorite "Cherry Ball," to the last selection, "It's Over."

The album features ten tracks, all written by the artist except for the Skip James' number, Junior Parker's "Train I Ride" and the traditional "Catfish Blues." Lightnin' Malcolm adds drum accompaniment to four of the songs and Bud Spires joins in with some fine harmonica work on "Catfish Blues."

"Blue Front Breakdown" is a tribute to the Blue Front Café in Bentonia, Mississippi, opened by Jimmy's parents in 1948, which Jimmy took over when his father passed away in 1970 and now stands as the last juke in town. This is where all the songs on the album were recorded.

Done Got Tired of Tryin' makes the listener hunger for a simpler time before so many original juke joints were lost in the name of "progress." The artistry of Jimmy "Duck" Holmes stands as testament to why this music must be preserved as a historical treasure. This is the real thing, and you will enjoy hearing it again and again.

I bought this on a whim thanks to Amazon recommendations, and really enjoy it. It's quite original, stripped back, and really enjoyable blues music. I'll be looking out for more from Mr Holmes.
